comment by Captain Ron Codpiece (U19217) “Rosberg was maintaining the gap at Silverstone until his gearbox had trouble.” ““until the radio call complaining about a dodgy gearbox, the gap was around 5 seconds, after the radio message, the gap started falling, slowly at first, then massively when the gearbox properly packed up”
Not true.
On every single lap both drivers were improving their lap times in accordance with their reducing fuel loads but slightly offset by increasing tyre wear.
From lap 9 onwards, Lewis Hamilton was gaining on Nico Rosberg on every lap.
Nico Rosberg pitted on lap 18, Lewis Hamilton pitted 6 laps later. The 5.955 gap was a result of spending more laps on the worn tyres and a slightly slower pit stop.
Lewis Hamilton on the slower tyre then outperformed Nico Rosberg on the faster tyre until after lap 28 when Nico Rosberg gear box failed. Until that point Nico Rosberg had been improving his lap times.

Could be a good move, just for his safety.
Lewis Hamilton starting from the pit lane?
Parce Ferme rules allow you to make any changes to your car without incurring a penalty providing the changes are for safety purposes.
Teams frequently change brake components between qualy and race.
I will have to keep my eye on that one.
Another advantage of starting from the pit-lane means he's not going to get caught up in the inevitable first corner accident. Starting 15th puts him among the reckless brigade.

comment by martial artist (U9033) “or maybe rosberg is just easier on the machinery ?”
Personally, I thought that MA's reply to BWFCCLEGG (U7583) was quite reasonable. MA did not make an accusation or single out the latest brake failure. MA simply posed a reasonable question regarding Lewis Hamilton's mechanical problems in this season.
It is up to others to answer his reasonable question. So what are the answers?
Australia - Lewis Hamilton retired on lap 2 with a problem that was discovered on the formation lap.
Canada – both drivers suffered MGU-K failures on the same lap but Nico Rosberg finished and Lewis Hamilton retired with a brake problem. Brembo? Or CI?
BWFCCLEGG (U7583) did imply that Lewis Hamilton was better than Nico Rosberg. But he did not support that view with anything constructive in my opinion. I actually think that Lewis Hamilton is a better driver than Nico Rosberg.
Nico Rosberg is no mug. But Lewis Hamilton is faster than him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
yeh -- just a bit of devilment on my part , in realty the time the drivers spend on the simulators , the seamless gearchange etc and the nursemaiding they receive in the car probably negates the drivers from really overstressing the cars to any great extent anymore -
i suppose brakes and tyres are the one grey area that drivers can make a difference , i have a funny feeling that rosberg has a better feeling for both than lewis but to be fair to lewis his style is quick so he is doing very little wrong -

bit of a grey area this -- think merc are worried because they are changing brake manufactures from brembo to carbon indus inbetween qual and the race which may mean a pit lane start because strictly speaking they are improving the car -
-------- still expect lewis to clear everybody up to the williams in short order wherever he starts so damage will not be to costly for him --
Mercedes have tweeted that Lewis Hamilton will get a new gear box and incur a 5 place grid penalty.
Makes the race even more exciting.
Lewis Hamilton will start the German Grand Prix from no higher than 20th on the grid following a five-place penalty for changing his gearbox.
The part was damaged in the Mercedes driver's crash in qualifying, which was caused by a brake failure.
Just start from the pitlane Lewis
"Just start from the pitlane Lewis"
Yep might as well.
Watching the GP2 this morning and it was raining.
I agree MUDD
WTCBU, some people just can't see what is so patently obvious, particularly with respect to Hamilton. One of them now changing his tune and questioning Rosberg's ability, or is the implication that Hamilton is not as good as the Williams pair?

2pm Germany time, 1pm UK time or 12pm UTC whichever suits you.
Forecast for race says partial clouds but dry and getting warmer.
vik, don't even fackin try it san
I'm still betting on Hamilton finishing around 6th or 5th despite his 5 place grid penalty! Rosberg is going to win this, Alonso 2nd and Vettel 3rd.
have they confirmed where hami will start in the pit lane or not
sky sports are saying he's in the pit lane
Hope he starts from pitlane. Be honest that is probably safer than 20th, look what happened at Silverstone....
won't he be further behind in the pit lane
Once the safety car comes out for the first corner crash he'll catch up the rest of the field
The FIA have stated that he can start on the grid.
They have also clarified that there will be no penalties for going off the track during the race.------
Cooler temps, will make things interesting. Race sim says after his second stop he should be behind the Williams.
Watch out for Massa he's a demon starter
