Essien was over-rated for mehad one really golden period end of 08/09 and the first half of 09/10 but apart from that kind of flattered to deceive imo. wouldn;t have sold him for any money back then)
----------------------------------------------------------------------
at his best up there with the best box to box players the PL has ever seen
----------------------------------------------------------------------
you said it yourself though, when he was at his best. for me that golden period was too brief for him to be considered a great
don't get me wrong, in that time he was amazing-game that stands out for me was the CL win at Anfield when he completely nullified Gerrard
think Makelele leaving freed him up more. sadly he aggravted an injury playing for Ghana and was never the same since
This will probably get laughed at but Robbie Earle was very good for Wimbledon in the earlier days of the PL.

There's a player. What a beautiful sight the Crazy Gang were.
Forgetting for a minute the cup final, the elegance of their football was quite something.
Right from the kick-off Fashanu to Cork or Jones or whoever, hammered right back to Segers in goal, no messing. Keeper usually got his first touch inside three seconds & launched it right backing into the mixer, Fash telling defenders were his space was & not to bother treading his patch, then it got really good.
The 'reducer' tackle would come in from Jones inside the first minutes to see if you fancied it. Long afternoons they were sometimes. Brilliant.
The Derby team of 2007–08
To accumulate a paltry 11 points and one solitary win all season is massively underrated. They were brilliant at being terrible
Igor Stimac
Louis Saha (unbelievable player when he was fit)

no....i'd back you with that.
even jonesy cld play more than he was credited with....still...his own fault for playing on the enfocer tag.
Rob Jones was/is underrated. He would have got a lot of caps were it not for the shin splints.
...........................
I thought he was very highly rated.
I have always been of the opinion your clubs hatred of Gary Nev stems from the nevster taking advantage of Robs injuries to set himself in the England team.
In terms of goalscoring, until maybe last season - Darren Bent anyone?

Agree with that.
Jones was a class act, remember him keeping Giggs quiet for a full 90 at a time he was running rampant.
So sad that he never got the chance to fully realise his potential with us. Bit similar to Jim Beglin a few years earlier.
Steve Bruce is another.
how he never earned a single cap for England i'll never undersatnd
top 3 underrated:
Parlour
Makelele
Keown
top 3 overrated:
Bergkamp
Scholes
Giggs

If any defender in the Premier League was perhaps underrated by the rest of us it was probably Gary Pallister. Fantastic player.
When you see these teams put on here for best 'XI' s he doesn't usually get a lot of mention even by some Utd fans it seems.
I thought he was right up there with the best of them. Wasn't much he couldn't do.
Wish we'd signed him under Dalglish that's for sure.

I think it stems almost entirely from the public proclamation that he "hates Scousers" (a real sophisticated philosopher, then, our Gary).
But his stock with Scousers has gone up since he started doing the punditry, because he's been un-biased, and perceptive. (Also Gerrard saying he got on very well with him, on England duty).
