4th is definitely the target this year. I doubt Van Gaal will be as happy as Wenger was to target 4th though.
Sorry I should say top 4 is the target
Vidic im looking at this as a point of view from the owners side.. Maybe they know afer fergie success is not going to be easy without spending top top money.. and from past experience it doesnt like there happy spending top dollar.. so they might be thinking aslong as were forth good cup run etc their spons money is safee...
If Arsenal and Man U both finish 4th this season who do you think will be happier?

Wenger 100%. That's HIS spot.
For a long time I thought exactly that: the Glazers wanted the highest possible profit, which meant they'd rather spend just enough to be CL regulars than spend a whole lot more to have a shot at winning it.
The massive new sponsorship deals change that picture for me. I don't think Adidas and Chevrolet are signing up to be associated with a team that is present among the elite. I think that revenue is predicated on the understanding that we will field some of the most exciting players in the world and be among the big titles over the next 10 years.
You don't sign shirt deals, worth more than Liverpool FC by competing for 4th.
The Glazers want to make money. United are a money makers wet dream, but the sponsors will jump ship quicker than the ex Chelsea fans, who are now City fans if they aren't competing for the title with a year or so.
i doubt it, AFC HAD to at least get 4th spot to pay for our stadium and help us progress and generate more money to eventually be able to compete on the market for top player.
Man U already have that money and fanbase and can already get top players, so i think the owners want trophies (PL OR CL) to help cement Man u status as one of the biggest clubs in the world.
Are Manchester United spending £500m on a new stadium and going to have to make a profit of around £20m every season for the next 6 years from player sales?
If not, the answer is probably no.

We already have an epic stadium
We make profit just not from player sales. For some reason (other than Ronaldo), we ALWAYS seem to let our players go on the cheap.

I would say a very resounding no.
We had a bad 1st half of the season, so the club sanctioned a £37m move for Mata. Would Arsenal?
We ended the season badly, so the club got rid of the under performing manager and brought in an expensive new one. Would Arsenal?
The club spent £27m on an 18 year old left back. Would Arsenal?
Until last summer, there might have been some grounds for such a comparison... But the Glazers have since spent around £120m on 4 players and have been ruthless in changing the management.

My point was it wasn't just our board being happy with 4th.
It was the fact that we needed to make more money than our income, and this was achieved through selling players.
Uniteds situation is totally different - as you've said.
For a club of Utd's financial standing to be happy with 4th place for financial reason would be pretty shocking.
You're not under any of the restrictions Arsenal were, and although we had the stability of Wenger to get us 4th place all the time, it would be quite the anti-climax, given his bigging up already, should LvG fail to get top 4.

Probaly not, but we have an abundance of attacking midfielders

Maybe if Wenger took us from champions to 7th in his first season, he'll be gone too.

City.
We are United fans because United win things. We are not going to change the words of our famous song to "Fourthy, fourthy, MAN UNITED" are we? So either the Glazers cough up with trophies this season or I'm off.
The club also spent £28m on Fellaini.
Spending big money on something doesn't make that something automatically good.

Wrong. Phil Jones was worth about £5m when he was playing for Blackburn, but the day we bought him he automatically became worth £25m because he was a Man Utd player, and that makes you more valuable. Simple business. We could buy any player from anyone then the next day sell them on for twice as much, cos who wouldn't want to buy a Man Utd player?
Glaziers are selling more shares to raise more money for themselves...
............
Why is this an issue to you?
Do you have any evidence as to what the Glazer's are doing with the share money?
....................
We tend to see alot taken out of the club, while min is put back in

From this statement I can clearly see that you don't have a clue. Maybe you should do some research on this subject.
