Throw in there a few relegations.

----------------

While you're at it, throw in a few promotions as well.

CIty have suffered from adversity. City have always come back from it. As a City fan, it's certainly been a ride. And one that has been enjoyable (ups and downs and all that).

You really think that? You really think that I think its not a worthwhile trophy just because City lost today?

The community shield is not a major trophy. Never has been. It's a curtain raiser, and while I would rather the team I support win it (when we play in it), I would never regard it as a worthwhile trophy. For it simply is not. Never has been. Maybe fans of a small club (say Burnley, or Wigan, or Rochdale) would deem it as worthwhile, but Arsenal fans? When they've won numerous leagues and FA Cups (i.e. major trophies that actually mean something)?

You beat City today. Well done. Arsenal thoroughly deserved to win. But don't dress the community shield up into something it simply is not. It's a one-off game. The value doesn't lie in playing in the community shield. The value lies in the actual competitions that the two clubs who compete in the community shield actually managed to win in the previous season.

Can you people not just enjoy something without petty arguing?

I'm not bitter so congratulations on beating our reserves and winning the David Moyes trophy...fully deserved

I agree with Ripley. You guys have got as good a squad as you have had in a while and won comfortably and deservedly today. Surely, just focus on that?

There's a difference between "not major" and "not worthwhile". You appear to be a trophy snob on another teams behalf. That's a rather conceited attitude to have don't you think?

It's a confidence boost and a nice event to have for the fans, absolutely, particularly of fans whose club is in London and don't have the nightmare travel to contend with!

It's nice to win, and congratulations to you for that, our defence (and whole team) was not at the level required. The fact that it had the same rules as a friendly and not a competitive fixture, and the standard of the whole game being high championship/ low pl shows how the managers think about it though.

Put another way, losing it really doesn't take long to get over! I'd be far more disappointed if we put that level of performance in next week.

I said that the community shield was neither major OR worthwhile in my post. Read it again.

Just in case you can't be bothered to read my post again - the community shield is neither a major trophy or a worthwhile trophy.

Doesn't mean that as fans we don't enjoy winning it (when would fans ever not enjoy winning a game?).

Just don't dress it up into something it clearly is not.

I am not dressing it up into anything. The FA goes to great lengths to put on this trophy competition every year. If you have an issue with that take it up with them, not me!!

Nasri said before the match that there is nothing friendly about this match. But suddenly the City apologists think it was just a training exercise. Oh dear! And what a spanking!!!

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/11021253/Community-Shield-is-generally-contested-by-good-teams-who-often-win-more-things-but-does-it-mean-anything.html

There's a good debate here which concludes that the community shield is generally a good indicator of who will go onto win things. Seems like a good confidence boost and therefore worthwhile.

I would rather someone debated the facts than gave such a conceited view.

Are you serious? I'm a City fan, and love it whenever City win a trophy. I just don't dress it up whenever we do win a trophy however. I see it for exactly what it is. If we win the league, then that IS important. Winning the FA Cup is important. The league cup is important. These are the three main domestic trophies to win. Is the league cup more important or worthwhile than the league? No it isn't. Do I regard the league cup or FA Cup as important as the Champions League (a trophy neither City fans or Arsenal fans have seen their team win)? No I don't. Does that make me a trophy snob? Is the community shield as important as the league, FA Cup, or League Cup? No it is not. Does that make me a trophy snob?

No, it does not. It's simply stating the truth.

Arsenal deserved their win today. Enjoy it (I would, had City have won). But don't dress it up into something it simply is not. It's really quite sad that an Arsenal fan (who supports a club that has won worthwhile and major trophies) is doing precisely that.

None of these super cups are proper trophies, it's mad that people count them in their trophy hauls alongside FA Cups, Leagues and CL's etc. I blame Football manager.

You should have warned Nasri about that, because he was quite mouthy about the very same non-trophy before the match. We are only returning the favour.

--------------------------

Except that it simply is not a good indicator. A confidence boost going into the start of a new season - yes, I'll agree with that, but over the course of a season it means very little.

Clubs who win domestic trophies (and thus get to play in the community shield) are generally good teams. I say generally, Wigan played in it last season and ended up being relegated. The winners of the community shield have not ended up winning the league (or retaining the FA Cup) for god knows how long now.

The community shield is not worthwhile. For it means nothing in terms of who has gone on to win things in the subsequent season.

But it's a nice competition to win. Not worthwhile, not important, not major. Just a nice competition to win.

Everyone took the mick out of Mancini when he was saying he won 3 trophies, Whatever people say about Moyes even he said it was more about last season and he has won feck all. Dress it up as you like but most fans have the same opinion about it for years.
On a City point of view last time we won it we were shockin the coming season the last team ewe lost we won the league, so lets hope that trend continues.

worthwhile
adjective: worthwhile

worth the time, money, or effort spent; of value or importance.

---

90 minutes of competive football expended for a confidence boost, a nice shield, and a good day out.

Not worthwhile?

Now you really are reaching.

"The FA goes to great lengths to put on this trophy competition every year. If you have an issue with that take it up with them, not me!!"

What? I don't have an issue with the community shield. I just see it for what it is. It's a curtain raiser. It's a charity event. You need to see it for what it actually is.

it's only worthwhile as preperation for the new season, other than that it means as much as much as the Emirates Cup.
