Big mistake to think Barça's approach wasn't pragmatic. Guardiola more than once emphasized the point by saying that Barça played the way they did because that was the style that best suited his players.

No, the Barcelona way was built on an ideology, a theory as to how football should be played. The fact Pep would have played that style if they have 11 Darren Fletchers, shown by his refusal to play to Bayern's strengths proves that.
The only reason you could even make an argument for the fact Pep set up the way he did is that the players were able to pull it off. Had it not been for the idea of Cruyff ect, then it couldn't be further away.
In any case, even with the players at Barca's disposal, the false 9 idea was something new and certainly not an idea that was built on pragmatism, how could it be, it was never tried before.
