David Luiz - 50 million pounds (day light robbery)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
You changed context here, you went with how good a deal it was for the buying club until this one, I thought you meant that David Luiz for that price was a steal
di maria is in the steep category
will only become an issue if hes not successful
The market really has gone mental thanks to the spanish big two, and some of oil clubs buying a few average players for far more than their worth.
If this was about 5 years ago di maria would be between £30-35 mil tops, i think hes a top player not an elite player.
Even in todays market i think real really have done exceptioonally well.
It's a lot of money to spend on a player who's position is not one of the weak areas of the team
It's not really changing context, I'm saying that I think certain players went for cheaper than they should have such as Fabregas, Costa and Sanchez, which would put them at around 40 million. Hence I don't think 60 million is that far off the mark. (Around 50)
Our wingers are very weak
50 million for Torres, you forgot that one.
Also 35 million for Carroll
I think judging transfer values by comparison to other players will always be folly.
Di Maria for £60m is a tad high, but not by much.
35 million for Carroll has to go down as the most insane transfer of all time.
The EPL markets itself as an exciting and attacking league. Di Maria's first 'rabona' alone, will be worth at least £10m to United's accountants. Maybe even more to the league as a whole.
I know the Carroll transfer was stupid but don't forget it was all relative to the Torres fee. If Liverpool had asked for £35m for Torres then Carroll's fee would have likely have been £15m less.
But saying that even if he was sold for a packet of crisps that would be too much.
Appreciate you're looking at relative figures, but wow - I can't believe we're all looking at £50 million and using the word 'fair'.
Football really does has a life of it's own. Where will it end?

You have to look at the money coming into football as well, £75m a season just to make our shirts. If we want to sign world class players, we have to pay these fees. Madrid have been doing it for years & brand wise, we are as big as them.
Di Maria was more then £5m less than James Rodriguez. Di Maria is a better player.
I'd say just under £60 is slightly steep, but it's not outrageous.
I don't think it's as bad a deal as people make out.
You can't say without knowing the length of the contract and the situation of the player as well. Some of your figures are a bit off too.
Out of interest, how much was Mata, and how would you class that?

£37m, but still time to be a bargain if he's played in the right position.

Agreed - just a shame that most of the money coming into football leaves the game into such a small number of pockets.
Greed.

Couldn't agree more. All of us at grass roots had to pay to play football.

Are you crazy? Nani, Valencia and Young have been shocking for the last 2 years. The only wide player that we have with any quality is Adnan, and he is still learning his trade.

The problem that I have with that is JR was more or less bought to replace Di Maria. Therefore Real must view him as the better player. Yet we paid more or less the same money for him.

He wasn't really - JR is more of an attacking mid; Di María was played there quite a lot last season because of his defensive workrate being superior to Isco's, but his natural position is out wide.
The other issue is that without detracting from his talent, JR was largely a glamour signing designed to rake in the cash.
