I have friends who support United but have never been to OT let alone Manchester who gave me stick yesterday
Plastics wind me up

Well said mate
Funily enough despite all the cockney red stuff you hear about I have yet to meet many people who were born and brought up in London who support Utd... Its usually those who have moved to the City and those who live in the Home Counties (who get lumped in with us) that follow Utd, I think a lot of it is clearly to do with self esteem issues when they are younger and having less fashionable local clubs to support (eg Gillingham, Southend, Colchester, Reading, Watford) etc.
does every spurs fan attend games if not are they not plastic too does it only apply to utd fans
You do not tend to find many northern Spurs fans do you?
You tend to find more southern United fans! even some in Exeter/Plymouth
bigred
------------------
When you dig down deep enough, you come to realise that the people who throw the 'plastic supporter' card around actually have no issue with who, or who does not attend a game. Only that their club has little or no of the said supporters.
Small club syndrome one could label it.

I wasn't having a pop, it was more aimed at my frustration about yesterday we played well for an hour then the spine went then getting loads of fairweather United fans come and send me abuse
We are all united!! Hear here... Perfect response pal .. A supporter is a supporter, what ever way it began!!
Many people from poorer footballing regions will grow up supporting the successful team at the time.
I grew up in Devon, have always watched and paid an interest in the goings on at Exeter City but when I went to watch them as a boy, it was awful. Didn't get too many chances to do so as my parents were not in to footy/sport. Nearest real footy team is Saints/Pompey, but still over 100 miles away!
So from about aged 8 I picked Spurs. They were winning the FA/UEFA cup around that time but were not champions, so I wasn't purely glory hunting, maybe just that the only televised football in those days was the FA Cup & European games with MOTD after my bed time (no VCR even invented then, let alone Sky+).
I guess it is natural to follow who is successful at the time in those circumstances where the other option is a low league, poor quality local team.
What I don't understand is Londoners supporting Utd, Liverpool etc when there is plenty of options locally. Anyone in the home counties should be ashamed of supporting a northern team, there is no excuse other than glory hunting.
In this day and age you can watch extensive highlights of every team with Sky so people just pick and choose who to support. It oftern bares no relation to their geography, family histroy etc...hence the amount of plastic Chelsea/Utd/Arsenal fans. Its quite sad really.

I know what you mean, but every club has those. Chelsea being the worst in recent times imo.
Those berks really are a different breed!!

take solace from the fact our lot outsung the plastics, at least for the first hour!
"What I don't understand is Londoners supporting Utd"
You'll be surprised just how few are genuinely from London.
I'd say 90% of United fans I watch games with down here are from outside the City, and the home counties for that matter.
To be honest, my original post wasn't really a dig at Man U fans in particular.
It was a more general point (as well as a little reaction to the usual disappointment after the annual visit to OT ) about the sort of people who are attracted to "winners" rather than those who pursue the lesser immediate-gratification pursuit of supporting a team with loyalty over a lifetime.
For the record, most of them in the pub sounded like professional northerners who live in London.
Actually, there aren't that many of us born-in-London Londoners in London these days, and soon there'll be less once the cuts in Housing Benefit begin to take effect

to be fair, I never quite grasped the cockney reds thing.... I can understand that we pick up supporters from towns with crap teams ('m from one of them, the town of Leek).... but surely a londener is only a tube away from some cracking teams?
"take solace from the fact our lot outsung the plastics, at least for the first hour!"
As can be said for pretty much every PL match. Away fans are always louder, as will be proven in the return leg at the Lane.
Having said that OT, for the most part, does have a dire atmosphere....
I was there and I can vouch for what Devon said

Agreed, I was on the Metro from Manchester Picc and there was a Cockney Red defending why he supports United
London being a huge city with a big population probably has fans of many teams, if someone in London stated their club was Blackburn or some other average premiership team people probably take no notice. As soon as someone in London dares to be a United fan it is instantly noted down and remembered for life. They think to themselves typical glory hunting cockney red...
Success breeds contempt, long may the contempt continue!
No lies.. I have a friend who supported United then changed to support Chelsea only 5 years ago

I have a friend who supported Liverpool when he started at my school and then supported Spurs because everyone else in my year at school, bar me, supported them. But he's very much a Spurs fan now.
I've also known people that change teams every year, it's not for me but different strokes I suppose.
i dont see how anyone could ever switch teams. its spurs from birth to death for me
There was a soccerett on last season who openly admitted to being a liverpool fan until she got to be 21 and then becuse her then boyfried was an Everton fan she switched She stood right there on the TV with a big smile and admitted it, I'm sorry but she should have been booted right up the ass and told to go forth and multiply.
Can you imagine introducing here to your mates,
Boyfriend: Here Kerry, she's my new partner (need to be pc) she used to be a Liverpool fan but now she's and everton fan just like me!
Mate: Erm fcku off!
