Good. Last thing we need is replacing players instead of making additions.

Wenger seems to treat his favourites (Giroud, Arteta etc) with unconditional love and support but the expensive signings he was forced to make, Ozil and Alexis, get played out of position or dropped for 'disrupting our style'
I actually agree that Alexis has disrupted our style this season.....because our style has been fackin garbage.
Don't mind Arteta but get that clown Flamini out of here
Diaby and Flamini are both out of contract in the summer i think so giving Arteta one makes sense.
We don't want to end up like we did in 08/09 when we lost Diarra, Flamini and Gilberto all within 6 months and instead of buying a replacement Wenger promoted Denilson

Arteta is good for us in the dm role when we are playing weaker opposition, especially at home. He keeps everything ticking over and his distribution is simple but effective. I am happy for him to get an extension.
For the tougher games against better counter attacking sides we need more of a more powerful player; flamini is not good enough for that role so I hope he doesnt get a contract

But this problem was blindingly obvious to everyone other than Wenger this summer.
There is absolutely no excuse for not getting the necessary DM in, and giving Arteta a new contract this early in the season is ridiculous.
Giroud is a good striker to have in the squad, he scores plenty of goals and gets plenty of assists.
Arteta on the other hand is a joke and should've been binned this summer. To offer him an extension is pathetic.

Experience is absolutely vital over the course of a season, i'm glad he signed him down to another season.
Come on FFS, having Giroud in the squad is a good thing. He does have a habit of coming off the bench and scoring. Danny was playing well on Saturday and unfortunately so was Lloris and Kaboul. Subbing Danny for Giroud in the last 20 minutes would have given then something different to deal with and we may well have nicked another goal or two.
Absolutely terrible news on both fronts.
Chambers is so good he can make an exact double of himself and play in two positions at once - Wenger

WB2 you are a marrow minded fool. We already have a high wage bill and would not be able to afford to keep Giroud on whatever his wages are and bring in a better option. its not just about options in the squad, but as you should already know, money as well. If Girouds contract has been extend so we can get a better price for hom fair enough, but I doubt that is the case. He needs to be replaced.
I am Gooner now
Giroud is only on 80k a week for the new contract. It's not like he's got a bank breaking wage already. Of course we can do both. Simply replacing Giroud with a better option would still leave us the same lack of striking cover we've suffered from for years. It's be great for us to have a top striker, Giroud and Welbeck. Would actually be what we call "Strength in depth" in the position. Something the club's not seen for ovr a decade. I know many hate him (unjustifiably in my eyes) but the best thing for Arsenal is to keep Giroud. For now at least. We have defensive issues which are a priority, we don't want the nightmare of having to bed in all new players in defence, midfield and upfront all at the same time. Replacing half the team all at the same time never works out well for teams. They usually just end up in chaos for a season.
So what if Flamini was better for us last season. Both he and Arteta are ageing and it shouldn't take a genius to predict that they were not exactly going to get better. What we should have done is be proactive to counter their decline.
The decision to put Arteta in the deepest mf position was made because of his lack of mobility restricted him when operating further up the pitch. It should have remained a temporary measure. The obvious fact that we remain so open to counterattacks because of Arteta and Mert lack pace should have rung alarm bells long ago.
But instead of solving the problem with the DM we are giving an extension to a player who plays in a position which badly needs reinforcing, thus burdening our budget and occupying a squad place to accomodate a player who was not even considered a long term solution for the DM role to begin with, who has repeatedly been found wanting at crucial elements the DM role requires, and who is ageing and on a decline.
Yes he keeps things ticking (when not put under pressure I must add) but in my opinion this should not be the first criterion by which a player of his role should be measured.
WB 2
We play 1 up top. A top striker AND Giroud AND Welbeck would mean 3 players competing for 1 spot. Do you really see it happening? I don't see it working at Arsenal, especially with the wages both Welbeck and Giroud are on. Would be a massive waste of resources having them both as backup.
In my view the optimal solution would be having a top class CF, with Welbeck stepping in as frequently as possible to give him the game time he needs at this stage of his career, with the youth (Akpom et al) providing further cover for the CoC and on similar occasions.
march, your assumption is wrong. Wenger never intented to buy another striker.

Yes and another pet hate moan of Wenger haters is lack of tactical options. Having 3 strikers at the club would give us the option of also playing systems that incorporate 2 upfront. Who says we have to play with one lone striker all the time
