Ok so...
A man in a wheel chair falls out of his wheel chair in the street,
do you
a) help him back in and check if he is ok
or
b) pinch his wallet because he is 'weaker', there was only a tenner in it but that's enough 'reward' to buy a Razzle and 20 L+B in your local cornershop
Please provide reasons for your answer.

What I don't get is why people defend footballers being mercenaries but when it comes to being a real life one they all get up on their high horse.

No human life is worth ending over monetary profit.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So if a bored billionaire offered you £100m to shoot dead a tramp he'd dragged off the street you wouldn't do it?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The more troubling question is would you do it? The answer you give will tell us a lot about how seriously we should take you in future.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course i'd do it. £100m to better my life and the lives of the people I actually care about in return for killing someone who wouldn't be missed?
I'd do it for £1m.

Now, I have never suggested that our government and the US government are blameless in the way they have gone about things with regards to foreign policy.
We have both made big mistakes. There is nothing we can do about that now. It is what it is.
That said, ISIS, which is the current flavour of the month, is not really a retaliation of any of this, it is a 'death to the infidels' kind of fanatical thing.
----------------------------
ISIS are a slightly different beast. Horrible that they are, they are very much a manifestation of our own policies. We have a long history (US/UK) of supporting radical Islamic groups of whom a) we acknowledge as being anti-western but b) whose own short terms goals align with ours.
The best work on this that I know of is by Mark Curtis, Secret Affairs: Britain's Collusion with Radical Islam.
I'd also be cautious about using the word, 'mistake' when talking about our policies. Mistake implies that our intention are benign and well meaning but sometimes 'misguided' or 'mistaken'. There's a clear and well known understanding behind the motivations of our policies and it has nothing to do with trying to do good ('spreading democracy!', 'humanitarian intervention' and 'fighting terror'.
UK/US policy not only decimates larges swathes of the third world but also endangers us here at hime. We should all be strongly opposed and outraged at that which is done in our names.

To paraphrase Britain’s Lord Palmerston, "Nations have no permanent friends, they only have permanent interests." Palmerston is, of course, correct and that fact leads to all sorts of moral and ethical ambiguity where today’s friends are tomorrow’s bitter and deadly enemies. There may not be room for either ethics or morality in foreign policy but that fact alone pre-disposes us to acts of terror and aggression as we selfishly ally ourselves based solely on our interests.
