Don,
This will on and on now like it always does with a chicken debate. Just admit your opinion of Sherwood was wrong and he's been a complete disaster at villa.
==================================
How many more posts do I have to write to agree it was a disaster? Someone is going "on and on" but it isn't Chicken .
I reiterate, my post earlier was in defence of his record as Spurs boss – which is a subject I’m more interested in than a period at Aston Villa to be honest – but I can totally understand why he was a candidate for the Villa job.
Vertonghen Groove
And Chicken, Sherwood wasn't thrown in at the deep end. He said he knew what he was doing despite the fact he didn't have any proof or badges.
=======================
By deep end, I mean he took over half way through, with a struggling team, with a bunch of underperforming new transfers, he had no option to bring in any of his own players – other than rely on promoting youth, and all of this with (as you say) no real qualifications. I know he didn’t have his arm up behind his back when he took the job, but the circumstances were far from perfect.
Other managers have had a full pre-season, been allowed £50-£100 million of transfers, had a worse record of results, and STILL been cut more slack.
Ace,
But he was allowed to spend all the money they made and it went on almost exclusively players with no PL experience. Combine that with a manager with virtually no PL experience and it gonna be tough.
==============================
I totally agree with buying players with no Prem experience – but when AVB did this there were a ton of excuses made about the bedding in process, having time to settle, and the manager generally getting far much more slack than we are seeing.
And to put it into perspective, Sherwood took over Villa when they were 18th, and sacked when they were 19th the following season (regressed by 1 place). AVB took over Spurs when we finished 4th, and was sacked when we were in 7th (regressed by 3 places).
For the record, I think they both deserved to be sacked but I would just like to see same viewpoints – rather than choosing 1 comment for Mr Popular and another for Mr Unpopular, in a same scenario (club specific).
I think that covers everyone's - sorry if i missed anyone out.
PS. FAO Don...I agree he deserved the sack..
My two pence
After what he managed with us I think he could of done well for another prem side.
More managers have done less and got a job in the prem.
His mistake for me was not getting in a hoddle type to be his number2.
He needs someone to reign him in and help him with the tactics side.
Like I out earlier I'd welcome him back in charge of our academy or if he goes Swindon or a team like that I hope we send him a few of our youngsters to teach
chicken some good debate here lads
I think it was right that his achievements at Spurs gave a young manager a platform to manage a big club (like Villa). It didn’t work out – but I like to see young British managers given a chance. Monk had no experience before taking over Swansea – he’s done an okay job – and maybe Lerner thought Sherwood could do the same. But you’re right, it turned out to be a disaster.
I totally agree about Young British managers being given a chance and about Gary Monk.
However Monk did not go around saying how good he was and that experience was over rated and not essential.
Re his comments and relegation, he stated that under him Villa would never be in a relegation battle again, silly and certainly came back to bite him hard.
Having said that I do agree with you that in the right situation he might well make a good coach.
He should really (and financially he can now) try to get a position with either a Championship or League 1 outfit to develop and learn a bit more about man management & tactical skills.
To everyone else, Chicken might come across as obstinate & difficult, however he does put his arguments forward in a forthright and positive manner, so you have to give him credit there!

Greaves,

==========================
Obviously I disagree with this…. I just think I stand for different things to the majority on here – and will voice what I believe in. My biggest bug bear is when I see complete opposite viewpoints on same scenarios – from the same posters.
But thanks for the comment – I think there’s a compliment in there somewhere...
I have to ask though, why it’s a big deal that he expressed a confidence that Villa wouldn’t be in a relegation battle. I would have bigger question marks if a manager (Tim or anyone else) said he was taking over an established Premiership side and he fully expected to be fighting relegation – hardly a moral boosting speech is it?
Chronic,
gosh I hope we batter villa on Monday
=========================
Am I the only one who feels more confident now Tim isn’t in charge? Now we have already established his Villa record and results were poor – but players in poor form always seem to revive themselves against us, and keepers have worldy’s, so it wouldn’t have surprised me if Tim had got back on track by beating us. Or am I just playing the club-fan victim card here?

Chicken..........yes there was a compliment hidden n there๐ธ
It wasn't just saying they would not be involved in a relegation battle, it was saying whilst he was in charge it would never ever happen again!๐๐
It wasn't just saying they would not be involved in a relegation battle, it was saying whilst he was in charge it would never ever happen again!
==================
I just think its a general comment and shouldn't be scrutinised too much.
Teams who generally finish Top 4 will say they can win the title, teams who generally finish below top 4 will say they can finish top 4, the teams who finish mid-table will say they can finish in a Europa position and I suppose for the teams at the bottom will say they wont be in a relegation scrap - always aim higher and all that...
Despite all the comments Sherwood got the sack because he is not a good manager. He was not a good manager for us despite some pointing at the results he got.
He won games against lowly teams and got us knocked out of every cup. Bad choice by Levy and an even worse choice by Villa.
grand,
He won games against lowly teams and got us knocked out of every cup. Bad choice by Levy and an even worse choice by Villa.
=====================
As far as i'm aware, every manager we've had since 2009 has got us knocked out of every cup...and before that every manager since 1999.
I dont know why this makes Sherwood so bad compared to the rest.
Love him or hate him, Sherwood's Premiership league record are second to no other Spurs manager.
By all means you can critisize his personality (although i'm not sure what that has to do with football), by all means criticize his style (please specify), or even his record at Villa, but you cannot criticise the overall job he did, with absolutely no transfers of his own, no time to imbed players and no pre-season, for Spurs.
He was a success at Spurs, albeit his reign at Villa was a total disaster.
chicken
Thats a matter of opinion, IMO he took over a squad that had a lot of good players. He beat teams that anybody with half a brain could have beaten as we had the better players. He lost games that anybody with half an ounce of sense would have won.
That does not make a good manager.
If you took over as manager and our run of games was Bournemouth, Norwich, Sunderland, Newcastle and Grimsby in the cup you should win every one of those games as those teams are poor.
That would give you 5 wins out of 5 would that make you a great manager?
Sherwood was and is a poor manager as his time at Villa proved. He had a summer transfer window with Villa and they are now bottom of the league. He won one game with them this season and that was drastically against the run of play against a team that are almost certain to face relegation this season.
He got the sack cos he was useless and I dont care how you try to use stats to influence things I dont use stats I use my eyes and experience. So put forward what stats you like my opinion will remain the same and as Spurs and Villa both sacked him I am obviously not the only person to think that way.
If you want a stat that is relevant try this one.
Two prem jobs, in both for under a year and sacked in both cases. That to me is a stat which shows what capabilities he has as a manager
