As per my initial comments I can see both sides of the argument but unlike some of the above misinformed contributions, in many cases being overweight is not a lifestyle choice but a condition, which is supported by medical science.

I suspect "What would Stuart Pearce do?" has to get the fire brigade in to help every time he wants to move from one room in his house to another.

I'll start my own party and the first thing I'll do is ban fat people from flying, I know it may not be their fault but we have to think of ways to make flying safer and the extra load we are carrying at the moment can only cause larger problems down the line.

Being slightly serious for a second, of course there are some medical conditions that effect weight, but this is not the reason the vast majority of people are overweight. And back to the original point of the article, what ever the reason for the weight they should still have to pay thier way in the world and that means extra on planes where weight means fuel, means money.

"weight means fuel, means money."

This.

5ft 9" and 153lbs

Just a shame that your personal opinion directly conflicts with medical science. Unless you have a greater understanding of obesity than the entire medical association?

My personal opinion is that for the massive majority of obese people the answer is to eat less and do more exercise, do you disagree?

If obesity was not mainly self inflicted, why are there so many more fat people now, than there were 50-100 years ago? It's a fact that people are getting fatter - you're not telling me this is because of a sharp increase in genetic conditions...

Jay

Exactly, it's to much food and not enough exercise in almost all cases.

Whether I agree or not is irrelevant. Medical science has proven obesity to be a disease.

Assume you accept medical knowledge how would you suggest airlines gauge whether a potential overweight passenger has a condition or not?

If airlines started to discriminate (due to weight conditions) I would image there may be a complaint/lawsuit or two.

WWSPD - what do you say to counter Jay's comments then?

It's not discrimination though, is it?

Another stupid comment. Average height of the Europeans in the 1st century was 170 cm for males and 160 cm for females. Shall we accept as these are the current standards to tell a person is tall and short?

It’s clearly discriminatory!

If an airline started to charge HIV, cancer sufferers more than others (or other recognised/accepted diseases) would you not consider the airline to be prejudiced?

Any court in the world would uphold.

There is no reason for that though. For overweight people, the reason is that they are utilising more of the limited weight permitted on an aircraft

People are getting taller to, but the weight gain on average is proportionately higher,

I'm not entirely sure what your comment is asking... Height and weight are 2 completely different things. For a start, you can't really control height...

taller too**

At the end of the day, surely a plane has a weight limit.
Therefore ALL cargo and bodies should be weighed for safety.
Otherwise, it is poppycock to charge for extra baggage when they have no idea how much weight they have on board.
-----

Maybe it is one of the reasons. But, it is more to do with how much fuel it should/ would carry for that journey.

Correct the medical profession does view obesity as a disease, it's just that it's a self inflicted one with a simple two stage cure in the overwhelming majority of cases. Ate less and do more.
