Fat people could take empty suitcases on holiday, help them feel better about themselves when no additional charges were levied.

Weigh the lardies at check in and give em a boarding card that not only gives them their seat numbers, but also show the extra carbon emmissions involved to shift their extra weight (this could be a carbon footprint tax)
Also give them an indication of where they stand in the list of fatties on board IE you are #2 from 47 weighed in so far

I really don't see how. It is a case of eating too much and exercising too little... how is that a 'disease'?!

It would be written into the terms and conditions of the airline that proof would need to be provided at check in.
-------
Being obese is a witness for a medical problem. What else would you need?
You seems to have problem with fat people.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't have a problem with fat people. A member of my family has an under-active thyroid which causes them to gain weight, hence they would be able to provide proof to make them medically exempt.
I weight approx. 75 kg (weighed daily at work). If an airline has a 15 kg baggage limit and my case weighs 16 kg, I would have to pay extra.
Someone at my work weighs 130 kg. If they were on the same plane and their bag weighed 15 kg they wouldn't have to pay extra, even though my entire weight, including my baggage is less than that person.
Hardly seems fair.

If its a medically recognised disease, they will have no problem obtaining medical exemption from further charges.

Ask a Doctor or medical professional. All I know that it is officially classified as an illness.
Maybe a 'medical condition' (i.e a condition that needs medical attention) but 'disease' I think not.
"I weight approx. 75 kg (weighed daily at work). If an airline has a 15 kg baggage limit and my case weighs 16 kg, I would have to pay extra.

I might put that in the article text, neatly sums up the entire argument.

You are correct my slap headed friend. Fat people walk around like it's not even thier fault when 99.9% of the time it is. They act like it's like racism, sexism or ageism if anyone calls them on it. Ridiculous, if you are fat reduce your calorie intake and boost your calorie burning. It's not rocket science.

I'm folically challenged
Very small amount of obese people have genuine reasons for it. Most are just too lazy to exercise and have no self control around food intake.

Of course you are entitled to your own personal opinion but obesity is widely accepted and acknowledged by the medical profession to be a disease.
Given the ruthless nature of airlines I suspect this is one of the reasons why a 'fat tax' has not been implemented by the major airlines.

Whatever obesity is going to be massive (pun) problem in this country unless it gets addressed.A lot of extra people will need hospital treatment unless we get to grips with it.

How would a passenger accurately enter their weight (most flights booked online) when they bought their ticket (without knowing the weight of their luggage months in advance of their flight)?
If they lost a few pounds in the months that follow from booking would they be entitled to a refund of the difference in price?
