Good research.

Is it true you get the same ranking points for a europa league win as a champions league win?

posted on 25/4/15

I'd have to check, redinthehead.

If I'm not mistaken, the no. of W/D/L points is the same, but you don't get as many bonus points for progress through the rounds.

By the end of the season, CL winners generally earn somewhere between 8 and 12 points more than the EL winners.

Drawing or losing games on the way to the title certainly reduces your ranking points quite noticeably. Chelsea's total for their CL victory was the lowest in the 5 year season, and actually identical to Bayern's tally for losing th final.

I believe the epl and Spain should be given only 3 spots anyway, it takes away some of the magic. The other spots should be given to the likes of the Smaller nations, e.g Holland with no qualification nessesary. LA liga and the EPL overflow with money, smaller nations need CL money to compete, otherwise fifas mate roman of FFP 'the rich gets richer' is working too well.

I'm sure you did hafi, but let's face it, european competition gets a lot less interesting when it's clubs from the same countries playing each other. I may be in the monitory but I much prefer CL footy to the prose league, the difference in styles is great.

Too many epl an LA liga teams allowed in at present. It's a totally skewed financial playing field against smaller nations as it is, this makes it even worse.

Good article this. Interesting read...

It won't make a difference to us; we'll be champions next year

He;s French, He's Flash... its not guaranteed yet and I would like us to finish 2nd and make it 9 out of last 10 seasons in the top 2, the same 2nd spot Liverpool fans lauded over Man utd

I agree with the general sentiment of this comment.

I do, like many, miss the days when teams from the so-called 'lesser leagues' could mix it up with the big boys.

The flip side, however, is that such a change would probably further cement the domestic dominance of some teams, like Spain's big 2, or Bayern's in Germany.

I wish we only ever had 3 slots......full stop. Having 4 leads to clubs like Arsenal taking the Michael with season ticket holders who don't consider just qualifying for the champions league a "trophy", like Mr Wenger seems to think and has done for years

If you only have 3 CL spots then your quality of europa league entrants will be marginally higher and you'd hope that you could claw a few coefficient points back there.

We have a nasty habit of undervaluing europa in england. A lot of people would rather have no euro football and concentrate on trying to latch onto the cash teat of the CL.

There are only two teams in the PL that actually have any chance whatsoever of winning the CL: Chelsea and Man Utd.

Everyone else including Arsenal and City will just make up the numbers

posted on 25/4/15

In fairness Arsenal do a half decent job of making up the numbers and earn us some decent coefficient points doing so.... City need to step it up IMO.

The ropey sides just need to get through the groups and maybe a knockout round to make a decent contribution.

This is true, especially when you consider the latter games of the europa are better than most pl games

The prem money for middling teams is still very high ioag. They probably look at EL and think that the money to effort payoff is way too low. I do think it's a shame. It can be a very very long road to the final though.

I think the problem is Spurs and Liverpool both really want CL football, these are the only clubs (regularly in it) with the resources to really compete in the ropey and the league.

Almost any other prem team seems to at least flirt with relegation as a result of the ropey league.

Even Everton who are probably one of the best clubs outside of the CL ones and Liverpool and Spurs have had a terrible season probably partially due to it..

As a Liverpool or Spurs fan I could probably happily miss out on it next year to give CL qualification a real shot....

posted on 25/4/15

Or you could just fecking try to win the europa and qualify that way.

posted on 25/4/15

The is pisieslt the problem-the epl is just too wealthy.

posted on 25/4/15

Honestly for Spurs I think that's their most likely route into the CL. There's too much to compete with in the prem.

I'm a United fan TCW.

Not sure winning the ropey is all that easy tbh, I think there'd be more chance of finishing 4th if you sacrificed everything else than there would be of winning the ropey...

Ropey being a knockout you just need one bad day or one good team, with the league running over so long you could beat a better team just by being fresher, less distractions, injuries and suspensions.

I wasn't directing anything at you. It's just a general frustration.
