Not that Id ever vote for them but must admit, I have some sympathy for the Lib Dems this morning, backed in to a corner by a Tory backed media campaign over just one of 100's of commons votes where they were forced to tow the governments line "for the sake of the coalition". Electorate lap it up and cane them for not opposing Tory policy by voting Tory FFS!

Have to take your hats off to the Tory machine for orchestrating that strategy and executing it with aplomb.

It's up to the people though Maf. They're committed to a referendum and once that happens you just don't know what the country is going to do.

For what it's worth, I actually think the UK as a whole will reject leaving the EU - not least because, as we learned from the indyref, the main stream media, big business and the big parties will all campaign against it.

Even then, I think we're still on the road to independence and it'll happen sooner rather than later.

Privatisation really grinds my gears but you can't honestly believe that the Tories have done anything other than a sound job over the last few years. The economy was on the brink of failure under Gordon Brown.

Now is not the time to change things!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

The economy grew more in the last two years under Labour than it did during the period of austerity under the Conservatives. It was only once the Conservative government eased on austerity that the economy grew.

If the rate of economy growth had continued at the rate it was at in the last two years of Labour's tenure, our economy would be as strong as Germany's. Unfortunately austerity held us back and the baffling thing is, the Conservative government, rather than learning from that mistake, are going to make more cuts, probably borrow more money and give more power to the big businesses.

Our economy will now continue to be held back, whilst figures are patched over by things like zero contracts and failing business that are allowed to continue due to tax breaks. This is not a win for the country.

Maf, if we had voted 59 Labour MP's we'd still have had a Tory government.

We voted for the party that best fits our beliefs. That is no longer the Labour Party. To again quote Jimmy Reid, I didn't leave the Labour Party, the Labour Party left me.

What we hoped for was a minority Labour Party which would be forced to put progressive, left of centre, anti-austerity measures in place because it would have relied on SNP support.

We didn't trust them to put these kind of policies forward on their own.

It seems the English didn't want them to put forward these kind of policies full stop.

Bollócks. Don't try to imply that Scots are more forward-thinking and altruistic than the rest of the country. You voted for the populist national pride party, nothing more.

TheSkins

And your comment right there is why Labour were destroyed up here.

You simply don't understand what is happening up here. Nationalism is NOT the driving force of what's happening up here. We simply believe that Westminster does not work and we do not believe that the Labour Party represent our views.

It staggers me how much people down south have bought into the Tory driven, Murdoch backed view that the Scots are all Braveheart-loving, English hating nationalists. It's so far removed from the truth that it's laughable.

posted on 8/5/15

Well yes it's a given that Murdoch is controlling my thoughts. Not that I read any of his papers or watch his news channels

I'm sure the SNP are secretly loving the result down here too. It gives them a nice dividing line between valiant Scotland and the evil Tory English.

posted on 8/5/15

Then what has made your view on Scotland so hopelessly wrong? Because it is frighteningly wrong.

As for the SNP loving the result, there's no doubt that this election was always going to be a win-win politically for the SNP. It will help the drive to independence.

But nobody within that party is going to be "loving" a Conservative government and the increasing levels of poverty it will bring.

S'funny how people who's views on politics is spot on are clueless about football. For me.

Ivan and Tam, your opinions on Arsenal are atrocious, bordering on childlish.

All I can say is: ich liebe Deutschland. Thank heavens I'm leaving the country for the duration of this government.

Really it is the people of Britain who should be ashamed.

Thanks Mafiaboy. I'm at the stage where I'm becoming very excited. I seem to find a new reason to go every day, as well as potential problems or difficulties dissolving before I even get to them (funding, housing, etc).

I can't either. I'm very upset. Ridiculously, part of the reason may be Brighton fans not liking his opposition to the Amex stadium. I didn't agree with his opposition, but it's a stupid reason to vote him out.

The biggest winners last night were UKIP with 12.6% of the overall vote and 3.8million votes, thats a massive step forward, now the third party and have displaced the Lib Dems

The only real downside if you can call it that is you'll realise just how bad people in england have it. The weather, the jobs, housing and even the friendlyness or lack thereof your fellow countrymen.

blame labour for moving to far to the left and the threat SNP + Labour.

The English voters seem to not want to go for that.

Shame without the Liberals, Dave is now on his own.

Also, they have not forgiven the party for being the party that oversaw the start of the recession.
