Did anyone like Jaws (1975)?
This was made in 1916:
https://youtu.be/wZKisd6qwpA?t=2658

Am not saying things haven't moved on, but the whole stretch they're underwater from around 39 minutes is pretty amazing.

Napoleon (1927) was over 5 hours long, and some parts of it are pretty bland. There's some amazing stuff in it too though, as briefly indicated in the trailer. There's only a flash of it here, but in one scene there's a horse chase at full gallop being filmed from behind and the side on rough ground, with a perfectly still camera. No idea how they did it!
https://youtu.be/6504eRh5h6M?t=25

This is from 1930, the first major on location production:
https://youtu.be/C7KF-sZpCTo?t=2788
there's several incredible scenes in this.

Take a look at the technical brilliance of this sequence from Kalatozov in 1964
https://youtu.be/rjuLkJ4m-mc?t=29

the beauty of Visconti's The Leopard (1963), the most visually beautiful film ever made, where almost every shot is set out like an oil painting:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNnkachomJs

The 2 minute shower scene in Psycho that they took a whole week to shoot:
https://youtu.be/0WtDmbr9xyY?t=39

What about the lavish Uncle Tom's Cabin scenes from The King and I (1957)? Nobody puts effort into production like that since the 60s.

Kubrick's 2001 Space Odyssey (1969)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oR_e9y-bka0

and Barry Lyndon (1975) where he used cameras used by NASA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YQE73GDo4So

If you read about The Lighthouse (2019), which is a visually stunning film, you'll find that it's because he found lenses from about 70 years ago, the quality of which aren't used any more.

What about some of David Lean's work? Lawrence of Arabia 1962.

Incredible.

The invention of Resnais in Last Year at Marienbad (1961)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3Tvl1Fuxt8

Some of the inventive stuff Orson Welles did.

The detail of Antonioni, showing the texture of this rusted metal:
https://youtu.be/ELREFqdkHqM?t=1606

The imagination of Jean-Paul Goddard.

There are almost endless things I could show you.

Directors in the 80s and 90s simply didn't bother, and the quality was never put into the production either. There are a few exceptions but not many. The 90s is the lowest point in filmmaking history.

I’ve tried to do them as I remember them at the time, either watching them at the cinema or on VHS. I was in school during the 80’s and lived for Friday nights when the ‘Video Van’ would come down our street.

Those really were the days…. I actually get a little melancholic when I think back and compare it to how things are now….
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I miss the 80s so much, so many things of don't get in vans with strangers who offer you sweets.........but videos, no problem!

And there was such weird sheet available too, all those dodgy 80s cartoons which were I guess looking back people on drugs cos there was just straight up some trippy sheet along with your land before times 1-19 or Rupert the bear
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, I long for the good ol days, even if they weren’t as perfect as we like to pretend. With technology connecting us it has made sure we are only connecting in the most shallow level. Going to a video rental store with friends or family, talking about what we’re should choose, buying snacks, leaving with a movie or two and an expressway to diabetes in a bag…. Just so wonderful. The memories or an activity together. It was an event every time. I miss that connection. Somehow it felt more substantial than getting together with people then just streaming off whatever platform the movie is on. It’s less…. Analog. Less special.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Those times weren’t perfect by any stretch, there’s no such thing. But they were more straightforward, and I think that’s what I miss the most.

that trailer for The Leopard is absolutely appalling, but I promise you that (whilst the story isn't the greatest) it is the most visually stunning film ever made (without green screen etc).

If you were being sarcastic btw It's Only A Game, it's astonishing to me that they were filming under water at all in 1916, let alone in the ocean (which they clearly were for the shark shots).

The octopuses's eyes might look at bit crap now, but not really much more so than Jaws. Imagine seeing that in 1916, you'd crap yourself.

Just as people did with Lon Chaney in 1925:

Generally speaking, the quality of film production and direction got gradually worse from the end of the 60s through to the end of the century, then started picking up a bit again.

I'm talking shti tbh. Just ignore me.
Apologies for coming across like an a55hole.
Everyone gets what they want out of films, and a top 10 pre and post 1980 was as stupid an idea as you'll ever hear.
I will come up with some examples though, but give me a while...

----------------------------------------------------------------------
just seen this..... its all good !

its a preference thing, nothing wrong with having an opinion, just not a fan of people deciding what others should like.

I've seen 3 episodes and thus far, it has been an excellent watch. The writing, story, tension building, character development and set designs are superb.

Finished ep 4 last night. While I have my issues with some of it, I am enjoying it and I’ll always have time for the Twilight Samurai ❤️

Not at all. Just talking about the quality of production, which at the top end was unrivalled since the 60s, and at its lowest poibt in the 90s.

What makes an enjoyable movie I agree is a seperate matter and completely subjective.

Was just reading an article listing random surprise facts about nkade runner. One I didn't know is that Dustin Hoffman was originally cast as Deckart!!!
One they didn't mention was that in the scene where Darryl Hannah met the guy who assisted in making the replicants she broke her elbow when she smashed the car window. They carried on filming and used the take.

I’m playing a lot of poker atm. Try playing that and reading subtitles at the same time. It’s literally impossible!

Why would you do anything other than watch what you’ve put on to watch? Seems a bit daft
