Schindler's List is simply one of those movies everyone has to watch in their lifetimes.

Inception is a masterpiece imo

Wouldn't bother with American Hustle, good cast not a great movie.

I’d make it compulsory viewing in schools, as young as possible. If that doesn’t install humility into them then nothing will.

Subtitles can be distracting but I only use them when necessary, such as shows where the language spoken isn't English. It adds authenticity and substance and if it means I need to focus more and read quicker, that's something I am willing to do.

It’s far better than watching it dubbed. That drives me insane!

Most of them yes, which is why it's such a random list.
Although there's a few I haven't watched for a while that I just want to recheck (for finalising my best/favourite films list). Ones on there I've seen before are:

Key Largo (1948)
The Third Man (1949) (part)
Rashomon (1950) (part)
Get Carter (1971)
No Way Out (1987)
The Departed (2006)
Inception (2010)

Rocky 1 and 2 would do the trick as would other movies like Shawshank Redemption.

That’s a crazy amount and is almost primarily all criterion collection films. Is that how you’re making your choices?

I'll get through them. When I realise they aren't going to make my top 100 I stop watching them.

How I select them

My god.

So, about maybe 2 years ago? I started trying to find the best film of the 2010s. So for that I went through various lists, finding suggestions for best film of the decade. I then looked at the reviews and watched the trailers, and some of them I took through to a full viewing.

I ended up doing that with every decade going back to the 1920s.

I was also on forums, asking for suggestions for most of these decades, and again when I got a suggestion, I looked at the reviews and the trailers the same way.

Then after I'd done that I went through the Sight and Sound lists, so the top 100 as picked by directors, and the top 500 (I think) as picked by critics.

I then went through the They Shoot Pictures Don't They top 1000. Again not watching every film but identifying all those (non documentary) which I thought might be a possibility, and then doing the trailer and review round.

Recently I finished a 'book' on the 200 greatest actors and actresses. As a part of that I identify their notable movies. This latest list, has come from going through that list of those 200 actors' notable movies, and identifying the one which I haven't watched and (from trailers and reviews) which ones I think have a chance of getting in my best films list!

Port of Shadows is fantastic.

it's daft as a brush, but there's gorgeous camera work, and it's perfect as the first noir.

Very excited for the start of this. I’ve mentioned this before, really looks like it’s going to be a good one, with a few of the GoT cast starring in it. To really get the best out of it you really need to read the trilogy, though it’s an epic read so I guess most won’t want to!

My silent movies:

Easy Street (1917)
Sherlock Jr (1924)
The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) Germany
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927)
The Passion of Joan of Arc (1927) France
Napoleon (Acts 1 and 4) (1927) France
Pandora’s Box (1929) Germany

there's a good Swedish one too, but it's a bit long for a silent film.

I think this is my complete list up to the end of the 40s:

SILENT FILMS
Easy Street (1917)
Sherlock Jr (1924)
The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926) Germany
Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans (1927)
The Passion of Joan of Arc (1927) France
Napoleon (Acts 1 and 4) (1927) France
Pandora’s Box (1929) Germany

TALKIES
Blackmail (1929)UK
M (1931) Germany
Scarface (1932)
Port of Shadows (1938) France
The Roaring Twenties (1939)
Citizen Kane (1941)
Day of Wrath (1943) Denmark
Rome, Open City (1945) Italy
My Darling Clementine (1946)
Out of the Past (1947)
I'd maybe also include Key Largo (1948)*

*for Edward G Robinson

The silent films are mainly for the film making interest, and the talkies are mainly due to being a great watch.

thought he was excellent in Bullet Train, he seems pretty diverse as an actor also.

I dont really care for Bond much nowadays, preferred the old misogynistic cheesy Bond films, not the Bourne like films we get today.
