I would dump all for us to sign Benteke but we won't sign Benteke while Adebayor and Soldado are on the books, plus Benteke is injury prone and while he is an outstanding talent, he will cost 32.5 million.

Signing defenders doesn't mean the defence will improve, so while I can't argue Pochettino is focusing on the defence, that doesn't mean he has the ability to improve the defence as a unit.
Simply throwing money at a problem usually means you end up with more players on the books, yet the problem still exists and next season the defence will still be woeful, just with a different centre back partnership.

Yes, but are they better? I can see what the club and Pochettino are trying to do, by signing two defenders with PL experience and a highly regarded defender from abroad.
Just, there is more chance wimmer will be no better then Fazio or chiriches and Toby is worse then Verts and Tripper is worse then Naughton.

Not so much downbeat and negative, more being realistic, as just because you want the club to be a success, that doesn't mean you have to put a positive spin on all aspects of the club, especially transfers.
If these signings are a success then I will be happy to be proved wrong, yet being realistic there is a much greater chance they will fail and the defence next season will still be woeful, just with a few different faces in the team.
There is being realistic & then there is negative.
The one area that needed addressing was defence & Poch seems to have got a good handle on that now. I would suggest that we have potentially improved our defence to the tune of 8-10 points & lessened our goals against by 15-20. That is how I rate the signings.
Wimmer.................................Good stopper & flexible
Tripper..............................Very good R/B with Premier experience.
Walker..............................On his day as good as anyone
Verthongen..........We know he is good, just need him to show us again, how good.
Dier....Had a good first season & will be even better
Fazio..............Quiet first season, but has ability & height to succeed.
Alderweireld....................Proven PL player & Belgian international.
Rose.........If he builds on last season he will be brilliant.

You're putting a positive spin on all your points and we have been here before,. same happened when we signed Lamela, Paulinho and Soldado.
Lamela - Superb close control and offers goals from the wing, while being a fantastic dribbler and regarded as one of europes leading talents.
Paulinho - Brazilian international with flair, great engine and an eye for goal.
Soldado - third only to Messi and Ronaldo in goal ratio last season and a spainish international.
You see my point? positive spin on new signings in the main is just that, positive spin. When it comes down to the actual season, most fail and most turn out to be a shadow of what fans believed they would offer.
The point you are missing is that in two key areas, both players are proven PL defenders & not imports from a foreign league.
If you can't be positive at this point in the build up to the season, when can you be??
You strike me as someone who delights in bringing people down to your level!

One season in the PL isn't proven, to be proven you need to have been playing at the same level for a sustained period.
Yes I can see that the club and Pochettino think they are signing proven players, but one season isn't proven.
But we will see, as we can come back to these debates during the season and see if any of our opinions have changed.
So one season at a club who were in the Top 4 for a large portion of the season is not enough evidence for you?
Apparently Tripper had some of the best stats for any defender in the PL playing for a team struggling at the bottom of the table, not good enough for you??
We are not Chelsea, United or City, we will not attract the so called top players (Falcao) & certainly cannot match the wages paid until we have the new stadium.
I think one or two of the players who did not quite do it last year might well show us what they can do this year.
Lamela was playing well in the last 3rd of the season, Soldado is a favourite with fans because he tries & does not hide. He is also a very intelligent footballer. Chadli has been a success.

When I look at saints last season, they had many players that played to a level that never matched their previous level and that makes me wary and always has made me wary.
One season in the premier league performing at a decent level, is just that, one season.
Which is why I still view these signings as a risk, much like Lamela, Soldado and Paulinho where risks.
Yes they are on a much lower scale, in terms of transfer fees, yet they are being signed to improve the squad and I don't see them offering improvement.
Soldado is an intelligent footballer. I agree, but he wasn't signed to show some intelligence, he was signed as a goalscorer and lets not pretend he has been a success.
Chadli has done well for his second season, but there is more chance of him under performing next season, then repeating his form (or improving) so I will wait and see how he performs before I view him as a success.

We signed Chadli to offer width from the wings, he wasn't signed to offer goals and assists in the manner that he does, its been a welcome surprise and no one predicted he would produce to the level he has.
So in my mind, he has failed to deliver on the reasons he was signed for as his wing play has been woeful and his general standard has been mediocre.
It may be the case that he has developed into a player that we never predicted he would, and yes that would be a positive and it would make him a success, yet there is also a greater chance that next season his general play will still be mediocre and he won't offer the same return in terms of goals/assists.
The only game last season where Chadlis general play was outstanding, was against Chelsea at home, if he could offer that type of ability aswell as goals/assists that we would have an outstanding player, but currently there are still question marks as to if he can continue to improve.
"We signed Chadli to offer width from the wings,"
No we didn't, we signed him to play as a inside forward who's job is to cut in and score goals. Width in our formation is the job of the full backs.

The full backs can't offer width themselves, they have to work with the winger (or inside forward)whichever name you want to assign, but Chadlis general play has been medicore and he wasn't signed to offer medicore general play as for most of the game he goes missing and its only his knack of scoring which has been a surprise.
But when Chadli was signed, Bale was still at the club and the idea was for Chadli to operate from the wing offering width while allowing Bale to continue in a free central role, and also interchange with Bale, but in the end Bale moved on.

So if Bale moved on and consequently Chadli began scoring, how does that remotely resemble a failure?
Players adapt and change in style to be more productive. Ronaldo has given up on tricks and flair to become more productive and a better finisher.
Sorry, but your opinion and reasoning for Chadli is silly. I wont even bother explaining any further as to why.

You have repeated my comments regarding the positive aspect of a individual developing into a player that wasn't predicted so all you have done is attempted to pick up on the failure remark, which was solely regarding aspects of his play, rather then his contribution as a whole so pay attention if you want to try and comment, especially as I'm not claiming Chadli to be a failure overall, I'm looking at his overall contribution and his general play has been average and there are still question marks if he can continue his form in terms of goals/assists.
I sort of get your point, sort of.
But at the same time, he was a better player for us in his second season than he was in the first. So I don't think that it's more likely he'll decline. If anything, I'd say it's more likely he'll carry on improving.
Not sure he was ever supposed to be an out and out winger but I could be wrong.

Chadli could improve, I'm not disputing that, but if he doesn't improve on his end product and all we see is a player with mediocre general play and a lack of end product then I would view him as a failure.
Dembele was outstanding at first and then his form declined.
Verts was outstanding at first and then his form declined.
Yes Chadli had a good second season but he could decline, there is no guarantee he will improve and also we don't know if Pochettino views him as first choice for next season.
