What to do with Mesut Özil?

Özil is central to Arsenal's play. But his subtle style means when he's off his game he looks really bad even though he's still our main creator. Compared to someone like Fabregas who is a lot more direct. So even if he's playing bad, he'll create 1 or 2 great opportunities which doesn't look bad on him. Özil chances are created when he's in and around the area. Fabregas can be created from his own half so to the viewer the Hollywood pass makes it look glamorous.

But it doesn't help that half the team was playing central yesterday. It's time to drop Ramsey and play Cazorla central with Ox and Walcott as wingers

No doubt Post. I saw Mata try hard to become a "Mourinho type" player. It takes away what he is good at though if he's spending his time defending and chasing back. His game is picking the ball up in the final thread and threading through passes to the strikers.

Maybe I need to watch it again, but I was far more concerned with Coquelin attempting and failing to switch play again and again, Ramsey thinking he's Cruyff trying fancy back heels, extravagant passes and flicks. And shooting when he had much better options. both players being unnecessarily flash.

I was also concerned with how Cazorla doesn't seem to have a fixed position. You can only have so many roaming players.

There was a distinct lack of discipline in our team yesterday. I thought our players had grown up over the last few months but clearly not.

You can criticise Ozil all you like, but at least he attempts the basics right. When the rest of the team can't put 5 passes together without it going out for a throw in, it's no wonder he didn't have much to work with.

Ozil is not our biggest problem, as I mentioned in my last comment. Everybody needs to get the basics right first. Then we can worry about other things.

Why do players dwell on the ball?
----

Because there was no movement in front of him. And the rest of the team are to blame too. But that shouldn't detract from him taking ages to make a decision with the ball and then getting dispossessed effortlessly by WHU's midfielders. Then getting drawn in to committing stupid fouls.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Exactly. Ozil cannot make any first time passes if the passing lanes are blocked because there is no movement up front. So its either keep the ball or lose possession. And dwelling on the ball you eventually get dispossessed anyway. This slows down the entire tempo and then everything is easy to defend for the opposition. It wasn't only happening to Ozil, but to Santi and Ramsey as well.

I'm sure the team will improve but he needs to step up now. There has been so many excuses made for him.

As our number 10 he needs to make the difference. I don't care if he has Giroud to work with.

I still think he was better for you than he has been for us (and I really like him). He'd be great playing for Wenger.

Then why do you think anything will change? Trying the same thing over and over again but expecting different results is madness.

We had this problem with Torres and our midfielders. Some said it was the midfielders not providing Torres iwth any service. Some said it was Torres for not making himself available. In the end, it was a bit of both. Fabregas improved the directness and Costa was an upgrade on Torres.

Post - Yeah I'm not sure what has happened with Mata. I dont think LVG is getting the best out of him. He needs players close to him, to link up with. He was at his best with Hazard and Oscar all buzzing around him with Drogba upfront, he had someone to use as a target man. If Mata is used correctly, he can be devastating. He kind of needs a free role.

I do agree Giroud shouldn't have bearing on his performances. It's a lame excuse from his fan boys. What we need is more width. Same story every season. Ox and Walcott have to start next game. Alexis too if he's fit.

Last comment on Mata as this is an Ozil thread-
Post - You're traditionally a team that attacks from wide. I dont think that suits Mata either. Spreads the play far too much for him to have any effect.

Ozil isn't our biggest problem, but he is A problem. It is a problem that his inclusion in the team means we don't play as expansive, attractive or efficient football, especially when he drifts out wide (which I'm not sure if the manager instructs him to do or not).

Yesterdays performance was about the WHOLE team thinking they would brush WH aside, at home, on a sunny day, with minimal effort, trying to look good while they done it,they didn't think WH would play as hard as they did and they paid the penalty. You have to respect every team in the PL, and we didnt yesterday.
Ozil was not the worst player on the pitch yesterday.

Why don't you all ask the coach why fix what is not broken? Why put Santi or Ozil wide just to accommodate Ramsey. The coach lost the match, forget those mistakes.

posted on 10/8/15

AFC that wasn't the OPs point. His point was that ozil has had so many similar performances for arsenal including yesterday.

As an opposition fan, Ozil doesn't give you any fear when you see the teamsheets, like past arsenal greats have done.

For non arsenal fans who do you rate more or fear more when your teams play us?

Cazorla or Ozil

Walcott.

Nick
I understand that, and maybe it's because i'm still optimistic that our team, inc Ozil will click soon and play as we know they can.
As angry as i was yesterday, i cant start singling out players yet, it's only been 1 game, maybe nearer the end of the season my views on certain players might change.

carzola big time. But I'm a big fan of his. Sanchez is your most obvious threat though

If Ozil has another poor season his value will drop massively in the summer

If he is average up until jan then sell

But I'm not singling him out based solely on yesterday's performance. This is about his indifferent form in an Arsenal shirt since he joined us in 2013. Obviously I also want to give him until the end of the season to prove me wrong, but based on previous evidence, it's not looking likely.

No way Wenger will do that.

Straight swap for Reece Oxford imo

That's the problem right there

Wenger won't change. Ozil will continue to play as our number 10. Cazorla or Ramsey will start out wide and we will continue to lack pace and width

I'm sick of Wenger trying to shoehorn both Cazorla and Ozil into the same side. He needs to grow some balls. Pick one and drop the other because having both of them in our side disrupts the balance of the team.
