Berahino alternatives?

posted on 26/8/15

Well, exactly. There's always been vastly overpriced players and absolute bargains - I don't really see what's so different about the current market.

I just really think £25m for Berahino, new TV deal or not, is way over the top given his career achievements so far.

Lacazette will not go to a team of Spurs' level. He's good enough for the top teams in Europe and that's where he'll end up - probably for somewhere north of £30m, as well.

Other players in that position supposedly on their way for sub-£20m are:

Andriy Yarmolenko
Denis Cheryshev
Adem Llajic
Jakub Błaszczykowski
Victor Moses

...there's bound to be more, but all of the above are arguably more talented than Berahino.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of that list:

1. Andriy Yarmolenko is off to Barcelona, having turned down Arsenal (so no chance we could've picked him up)

2. Denis Cheryshev is off to Valencia (and really he's not in a long line of Russians who have been successful in the PL)

3. Adem Llajic apparently has been rather poor for Roma (which I wasn't aware of), which is why he's being touted around Europoe

4. Jakub Błaszczykowski - not sure why he'd leave Dortmund for Spurs. Also he's 29, so no chance Levy would buy him

5. Victor Moses isn't a bad player, but he's hardly torn it up in his loan spells. Probably worth a punt if it's sub 10million

"The fact that Stones (admittedly a good player) is going for £40m makes me feel a bit better about Spurs paying £25m for Berahino"

Domestic... I hear what you are saying but you are missing the point. We are entering a new era of football with the money that's flowing into the game, What u, I or anyone else thinks about how much we spend is a waste of time. Over the next 12-18months. Average players are gonna be moving for 20mln+. If Southampton called Levy today and said how much for Eriksen ???".... Answer is probably north of 30mln.... Is he worth it..... NOT IN A MILLION YEARS
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That's not really true in a window where Alderweireld cost £11m, Shaqiri cost Stoke £12m, Pedro only £21m and Arturo Vidal only £28m...

Fact is English players are hideously overpriced, and for the most part they aren't even that good. I think we'd all agree Berahino is no world beater. There's value out there, it's just Spurs seem incapable of spotting it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Again, Shaqiri is a punt coming principally the Swiss league and with largely unsuccesful spells in Italy and Germany. Pedro cost only 22million as Barca had a gentleman's agreement with him ... otherwise he would've cost double that. Vidal has long-term injury problems, so the cost of his insurance probably forced his fee down a fair bit.

Alderweireld I must admit looks excellent value.

I agree. All were excellent signings However its worth noting that none of Toby, Shaqiri & Pedro were starters for Atthletico, Inter & Barca. Berahino is young, English, scored goals in the Prem League and is West Brom's best player

it's amazing how much they've spunked over the years. How much was it for the Robbie Keane 4 month loan spell?

posted on 26/8/15

Clearly also the home-grown quota has artificially inflated the price of young English players.

posted on 26/8/15

Ginge - fair points all, but my point is that they're all sub-20m players, and if teams as big as Barca can find a player who improves them for sub-20m, surely Spurs could...

For what it's worth, Błaszczykowski has been strongly linked with Betis, so I'm sure he wouldn't consider Spurs too big a drop. And I'd agree that anything far north of £10m for Moses would be too much.

Agreed

...that's kinda my point though. Why chase a low-end-of-the-table club's star player, when there are tons of very good players not starting for their current clubs, who would cost half as much?

It's not like Berahino's quality is SO great that it makes it worthwhile spending double the amount. Not in my view, anyway.

25million then we bought him back for 14million I believe.. so we profited 11million for a loan basically

I think we're now in a world where our understanding of 'value' has completely changed. It seems we're looking at circa £10million for pretty average players, 20million for good players and 30m+ for very good players. The next 'world class' player will go for more than 100million. Madness.

This is so true, and makes me start to dislike football. Certainly I'm less interested than I used to be because it's so far removed from real life.

The talk about Neymat to Utd the other day, however far fetched, mentioned figures of 200m+, WT actual F.

Though in fairness to the likes of Southampton and Newcastle, they're shopping very successfully in Carrefour. Mane, Tadic, Pelle, Wijnaldum, Janmaat, Thauvin ... good players all and not too expensive.

Could be that our scouting network is a joke

Aye. I don't really care half as much about the sport any more. I spend more time at the cricket now than football ... cricketers you can chat with on the boundary; they're earning around 40k per annum and they tend to be smart and down to earth.

Footballers are generally c**** with no concept of either loyalty or how the real world works. Harry Kane is one of the few examples where he bucks the trend, which I think is why he's so popular even with fans of other clubs.

True, but my point is that there's still tons of gems out there who buck that trend.

It's signings like Dier who I'm thinking about. He only cost £4m, but he clearly has a lot of potential. Or Shaqiri or Alderweireld, who are very good players who were just surplus to requirements at their previous clubs, which cut their prices dramatically.

Spurs seem to have a very limited imagination when looking at players to buy - they don't look extensively at potential gems. Instead they just plump for flavour of the month players like Berahino.

Spurs could learn so many lessons from the transfer policies of Southampton and Swansea.

Looks like it might be a busy last week at Tottenham. According to assorted reports in Germany, including our old pal Bild, they are closing on a deal for Bayer Leverkeusen forward Heung-Min Son. About €25-30m, apparently.

OH GOD NO. Another in that pantheon of great Asian footballers ... 30 million?!?!?!

Agree on both counts. That's one reason why talkk of Bolasie worries me. He's SO AVERAGE. A few good games ... looks great on MOTD ... but why are Palace so desperate to get shot?

My best man is a Palace fan. Said to me 'yeah, no worries if we lose Bolasie. We've got Puncheon' ... That tells you everything you need to know.

I see what you're saying but don't entirely agree.

You've mentioned Dier, also Chadli, Dele Alli, Eriksen, N'jie, possibly Wimmer - these are all players who you would put in the 'potential gems' bracket.

Lamela was also in there (didn't work), and Paulinho also highly regarded at the time.

So I think that actually, we are far more imaginative than we get credit for. It's just that recently, more of these signings haven't worked out than have.

This is good chat. Going back to my original point (might've been on another thread), I think Levy might have been burned with the Magnificent 7 to such an extent that he's afraid to shop on the continent any more.

And ginge - glad someone else agrees about Bolasie. Really hope we aren't pursuing him. Some on here talk about him like he's the messiah who would solve all our problems.
