Arsenal are abject in europe, and havent challenged for the title in over 10 years.
In that time, Liverpool have been runners up twice, and been European Champions.

===========

We came as close to the title in 08 as you did in 09. Yes we finished in a lower position but points wise we had the same difference with the eventual winners
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Absolute garbage.

I didnt say title challenge, I said top 4 challenge. Liverpool were in for Alexis because of the money they were getting for Suarez and because you had CL. You don't have CL now and the Suarez money is gone.

Spurs splurged £100M the season they sold Bale, doesn't mean they could do it now.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Utter nonsense. We were in for Sanchez before Suarez was sold. The way you're saying it is that we'd have to let Sanchez go if we didn't continually qualify for the CL.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
😂 😂 😂 oh please you knew Suarez was going before the season was even over. You even tried to negotiate Alexis as part of his sale. And I mentioned CL as you had additional money to play with on top of what you got for Suarez. Now no Suarez money and no CL money.

All of you know your financial situation so I have no idea why you are pretending you can compete with any of the big 4 in the transfer market. I mean you have lost out on players to all of the big 4 AND Spurs over the last few seasons.

bats is only half bat shiite crazy

arsenal do have more financial muscle now

thats how they bought big names like ozil and sanchez. admittedly both were cast offs the giants didnt want or need, but big names nonetheless. like di maria.

world class is overkill as ozil has half flopped and cazorla was just a good signing no one else went for.

Arsenal did this for a decade when we were paying off the stadium
=========================================================
I bet you're glad you've come out of that phase now, and are winning league titles and Champions Leagues, instead of just paying off the stadium.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
What does this have to do with anything.
============================================================
Well let me explain.
You said “Arsenal did this for a decade when we were paying off the stadium”, and I was keen to know what the difference is between Arsenal now and Arsenal then, In order to better understand your point, as you appear to be finishing in much the same league positions, and still getting pumped out the the CL.

You see? It was a direct reply arising from a point that you made, that’s normal in what’s lnown as “a conversation”.

=========================================================
I take it none of you can actually argue my point,
=========================================================
I’ve already thanked you for your wise prophecy.
I do not wish to argue with it, because I do not possess your prophetic powers.

Not am I privy to the expectations or objectives of our current owners: they have only told you, they haven’t told any of us.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Are you slow man? I am talking about competing with clubs financially, not on the pitch. Don't actually think you are that slow because ive made it clear countless times already. Liverpool do not have the squad to compete with the big boys and don't have the finances to bridge the gap.

So we sign Sanchez then don't qualify for the CL the following season. Would there be a caveat that we have to give him back if we don't qualify every season? Is that what you're saying?

Eh no I said you were in for Alexis because you had the money to sign him that Summer. Not sure what part you are finding so difficult to grasp.

Liverpool don't sign the finished article anymore. They sign young/potential. Summer 2014 was an exception because of the Suarez/CL money. Just like Summer 2013 was as exception for Spurs when they splurged £100M+ after selling Bale.

I don't know how much more I can dumb it down for you.

======================================================
Yes I know.
That's why you said "Arsenal did this for a decade when we were paying off the stadium", right?
Presumably that implies that you are better off financially now, right?

And I suppose a paraphrase of my question, Bats, (come on, wake up, and I'll simplify it)...is what difference has that actually made?

=======================================================
Liverpool do not have the squad to compete with the big boys and don't have the finances to bridge the gap.
======================================================
I'm going to guess that you're counting Arsenal as "the big boys", right?
Just a hunch.

Well, during Rafa's managership we were in a much worse financial situation than we are now, and yet he finished above Arsenal 3 times in 6 years, and massively out-perrformed them in Europe, making us one of the top seeds alongside clubs like Real Madrid and Milan who had massiely more resources than we did , and delivering the Big OIne for the fifth time.

So I'm not sure that financial resources are quite as much of a predictor as you appear to be claiming.
It is a big uinfluencing factor, obviously , and maybe Man City will win every remaining league title for the rest of time, but I think you are overstating the case, with regard to Liverpool and Arsenal.

posted on 5/10/15

Rafa's tenure? You mean when Arsenal were a selling club and FSG/FFP did not exist.

Yea that is totally relevant to here and now.

We've just spent 32m on Benteke and 29m(?) on Firmino, whilst not qualifying for the CL. So why couldn't we afford to buy Sanchez for similar money?

Nobody thought Liverpool would compete for the title 2 years ago.
You grossly overachieved with Suarez Sterling Sturridge Gerrard all at the top of their games. 3 of them have since left and Sturridge is a crock. To expect to challenge with a
far weaker squad against far stronger opposition is ridiculous.
But then that would only back up my initial comment. Liverpool's owners and fans live in a bubble of Delusion
where they expect to compete despite not being that good and not having the resources to be that good.

This is what you posted Bats, where did you say top 4. Perhaps its my English thats off but anyone reading this post knows its not the top 4 you are on about.
You keep on getting properly countered on every point then you move the goal posts. As I said you are making it up as you go along.

Can't believe how much crap I've read in this thread. Why are we unlikely to get top four in the next three years? A lot can happen in three years you know. Let me know where you got that crystal ball from, could do with one myself.

we didnt overachieve ffs

we had an attack built on sturridge, suarez, sterling, gerrard and coutinho. its not like we were passing in circles hoping giroud would stop playing with his hair and looking at pictures of his boyfriend at a coldplay concert so he might score 1 in 3

Well for a start in the current market, the likes of Alexis would cost £50M+ so there is no way you could afford anybody of his ilk now. And you spent £32.5M on Benteke, a young player with potential, and as I have so often been told, £21M on Firmino, a young player with potential, because you received £49M for Sterling.
