Nas illmatic has to be one of the finest rap albums ever made.

The jazzy grooves laid down by Pete Rok have a lot to do with that. Ain't hard to tell, what a tune.

Baz,

Between Illmatic, Ready to Die and Marshall Mathers LP (unfortunately released in 2000 so I couldn't include it) as the best rap album ever, for me.

Considerable regard to some of the group stuff as well - De La Soul; A Tribe Called Quest; Jurassic 5 etc.

Rooney Hernandez- agreed, some good choices, de la soul and J5 have done some great work.

Entroducing by dj shadow, as mentioned by others is an incredible piece of work.

Excellent thread, this.

The 1990s really were superb for music.

Both by the Fall.
From the mid 80s until the early 90's they were magnificent.

Baz,

I must ashamedly confess that I've never listened to it - rest assured, I'm amending that as we speak and downloading it.

A few of the recent released have been promising after a significant lull in the quality of hip-hop: My beautiful dark twisted fantasy; Good Kid M.A.A.D. City; To Pimp a Butterfly (wonderfully compelling message); Compton; Documentary 2/2.5 (the last two not quite of the same standard but exceeded my admittedly low expectations)
