Yeah,Hales isn't going to make it as a Test Batsman.

England need to face facts that they're going to struggle to find 2 top quality openers capable of averaging 40 plus. Stick with 1 who they think has the technique, temperament and fits into the side well. If he can average between 30 and 35 then that will have to do whilst someone from county cricket builds a massive case for themselves.

Do we go with Compton opening and move Root to 3? Always worry that changing things for Root will unsettle him from the form he's in.

Hales has got one more innings to save himself. If he fails, dump him until he shows in county cricket that he's worth another chance. Move Compton to opener (since he's practically doing the job anyway) and give someone else a chance at 3.

I think hales as more than he has shown. problem is he doesnt know how to approach an innings. hes not a defensive minded player.. but opening you gotta reign yaself in a tab. and hes getting caught in mid stream.whether to attack or defend.

I think England have to try and squeeze past the follow on target. That will also take some more time out of the game. I'm not sure that South Africa can bat as quickly 2nd time around.

Bairstow has batted very well this series, needs to improve with the gloves but he's not too bad with those either.
