the gulf between where we are now and champions league (top 4) is on a different level compared to the 70's

I think we would need 500m to get to that level

Exactly what I've been saying.

By time an owner buys the club, services the debt, buys back the ground, TA or builds a new training centre, buys players window after window that are good enough to get us up and then window after window in Prem to rise up the league and then improve the ground so that we can compete, I reckon that is half a billion.

Forest had Anderson,Bowyer, McGovern, ONeil and Robertson at the start of the rise up the tables.
I feel we are way behind that quality in our squad and as people say we would need at least £500M to be able to get to the top of the Premier League.

Side & Jonty - totally agree with that figure.

hunwick, obviously depends on your age, but those were special times.

Every team seemed to have a special player and you'd know the players each year i.e. not loads of chopping and changing, also european nights were more special, you knew which days who was playing and generally wanted well for British teams.

Fans of other clubs still know the names of our players from that era, that's how special that team of ours was.

Great times Jonty, I am 51 and went to a lot of matches with my dad in the early 1970s. I remember the good times well which keeps me going.
One game that I do remember well was not a victory but a loss in the cup to Malcolm Allisons Crystal Palace. I sat in the south stand and was amazed at how well a third division team could play with a decent manager. For me this is a positive memory as it should give hope to all teams in the lower divisions.

I would think it would be hard for a side to be promoted and win the premier league in two seasons like we did without massive investment, though Leicester are giving it a good go, does anyone know how much Leicester have invested on players in the last 5-6 years ?

Don, I'm talking about the money needed to be regular top 4.

Jonty

Just imagine how much less we'd need to spend if we kept all our best players over the last 5 years and how much more talent would have come through the academy being a premier league club run properly.

Harj- Dickie Guy, I must admit I had to google that one, but I do remember the penalty. Great team we had back then, but I did like the 1991-92 team as well. 6-1 at Weds springs to mind.

Harrogate, maybe that's why people like cellino want to keep us where we are cos FL rules may not be as strict as premier league rules...cos I don't think there is a single premier league run as bad as us....

Villa or Newcastle, Harj?
