yep Ji has it bang on, those saying there was no contact need their eyes examining.
yes he was on his way dow, but there was contact.
no penalty though.
there was a lot the ref got wrong.
personally i think the Reid one was handball regardless of whether it hit his thigh first, his arm was still up above his head and stopped the ball going towards the goal, it wasnt in a natural position.
With my West Ham hat on, contact so a penalty. Also that is how many experts interpret the rules.
With my attempting to be unbiased hat on, the contact was minimal and probably didn't impede him so no penalty.
Problem is a lot of refs interpret any contact equals a penalty and unless that's changed any player feeling any degree of contact is likely to go down.
So until a clear ruling is made as to what degree of contact equals a penalty players will keep going down under that type of contact. I would bet a good percentage of the people reading this would be very upset if a player for their team didn't go down under similar circumstances to attempt to win a penalty.
BTW, I hate the phrase "win a penalty" as it implies the attacker has deliberately got a penalty awarded rather than actually trying to score/create a goal.
Webb did say after the game that the rule is if the ball rebounds off a player and into his own arm then it can't be given as a freekick/penalty. Not exactly sure why but if he's saying they are the rules then I guess you can't argue.
John Hartson the former West Ham player claims Payet dived.
Alas
He played in tougher times.

but thats a stupid rule and one that needs to be changed in my opinion.
had the ball been at his side and bounced up then fine, but it was above his head and stopped the ball from heading towards the goal.
I hate the whole 'contact so must be a penalty' nonsense. Since when did contact, in a contact sport constitute as a penalty? It doesn't, yet these idiot pundits say it all the time.
As Ji said, he was going down and the contact to Rojo made it impossible for him to stay on his feet, doesn't make it a penalty though.
Dunc
No I agree, if a player chooses to kick a ball and kicks it right into his hand then according to Webb that isn't a foul? The player made the decision to kick it and should be punished for his mistake.
But if he's claiming it's the rule what can you say?

Rojo right knee touches Payet studs.

Anyway, I think despite the erratic reffing it was probably a fair result on the balance of play.

Don't you think the contact warranted a penalty?
No as I said at the start I think the ref got it right. Not much different to Benteke's really. More contact obvs but a tough one to call. Rojo should not be going to ground there though.

bang on, Rojo gave the ref a decision to make when there was no need.
like i said earlier, ive seen those given.
It is very difficult which way to call it because if you look closely the attacking player definitely looks foreign so is a dive, but if you look from another angle you can see that the defender is also foreign, so is a rash challenge and inexperience of the passion of the FA Cup, very tough to see these things for the ref.
Anyone on here dive themselves?
I used to. Probably the strongest part of my game tbh.

So me and a lot of pundits say Payet should have got a penalty**
No penalty
Just rewatched it, Payet quite clearly goes down before even being touched, and the contact was minimal. It's a clear dive to be fair.
He also got away with a couple of fouls after the incident, shouldn't have been on the pitch really. Not to mention Valencia's two footed tackle.
Atkinson is a terrible ref and shouldn't be anywhere near the PL. I can't remember the last time I watched a game with him officiating and not noticed how bad he was.

Not a penalty or a sending off?
