I bet you said the same thing about Toby and Eriksen
At £12m as a back-up for Kane it's okay - I bet you'd like us to sign someone for big money like we did with Sold ado
----------------------------------------------------------------------
To be honest, I didn't say that with Toby and Eriksen. They had been playing at a high level (club and country) consistently for a while when signed. I was excited by those signings.
Janssen has spent most of his career in the lower leagues and is being looked at after one good season.
I don't see the point in buying a striker to play back up to Kane. Buy somebody who is good enough to push Kane and maybe force him out of the side on occasion. Buying a cheap back up who will show less quality than Kane when called upon makes no sense at all
Under Levy Spurs have done this so often with regard to passing up on genuine quality for cheaper alternatives, and it's never worked.
==========================================
Yes it has.
Nobody here knows what other business lies ahead. We aren't going to sign "world class" players but there will be others.
Also, you can't avoid buying top goalscorers from the Dutch league just because Afonso Alves didn't turn out any good.
Can't really pass judgement on Janssen if you've never seen him player like we do every week with our players.

He's 21 you know...
Every time I watch him, he looks slow, cumbersome, lacking in agility, lacking in mobility and technically very underwhelming. He doesn't look anywhere near a top level potential player to me in the slightest.
========================================
Pretty much how I would describe Kane when I first saw him. Fact is he's got an eye for goal, good work rate and double-footed. With the creativity we have in midfield I hope he gets a chance to prove himself.
The only thing I'm disappointed by about this potential transfer is that it means Spurs almost certainly won't be getting Batshuayi, who is a player I really rate. I also think he'd be perfect for this current Spurs team.
Seems Spurs don't want to cough up £30m for him though (which may or may not be fair enough), but a voice at the back of my head tells me this might even be a ploy by Levy to make Marseille think Spurs have moved onto other targets so they drop their asking price for Batshuayi...
Wishful thinking, no doubt
Signing attackers from the Dutch league is always a tricky one. For every RVN, Suarez, Eriksen there is a Kezman, Afonso, Alves, Babel. Hard to say how it will go.
I think the best strategy with the Dutch league is to express interest in Ajax's best attacking player, see who they're linked with as a replacement, and just sign that bloke. Save yourself 3 years and £15mil.

Ive watched some Dutch football and I'm suprised about your opinion of Janssen.
He certainly DOES have the right technical skills, he scores all different types of goals, holds the play up well, good in the air, has a great left foot and is no slouch either as you perceive him to be.
Yes he is playing in a poor level league and yes its a gamble if we sign him, like another player.
The Dutch national side believes in him and he is a regular starter and scorer for them so he certainly has the quality.
If Poch, Mitchell, Pleat etc believe in him thats good enough for me.
First we need to sign him first and if he does get behind him like any new signing and see what happens.
You can't also keep harping on about Stambouli and Fazio, yes they were poo signings but we also scouted and signed Dier, and Alli and look how they turned out.
Using the Dutch league as a barometer to imply all players are great in that league and not so good elsewhere is flawed too, Alderweireld, Vertonghen and Chadli played in Holland.
Janssen has scored at every international level he's played at. Something close to 3 goals in every 4 matches which is a great return.
Should be happy we're actually buying a striker
We haven't bought anyone yet. As usual it's a load of hot air claiming we are in talks and close to signing him then a day later the real news comes out saying we haven't agreed a fee. I expect this one to drag on for months like every other spurs transfer. One thing we do need is a striker straight away. Priority signing over anything.
Seems we are not even close as its been made out. Silly season keeps us interested till the action starts.

"I'm not an expert on the Dutch League or Vincent Janssen"
- opening your article with this line makes your decision to give an opinion on him confusing at best. I wouldn't have admitted this
"He's had one good season in a really low level league and that is somehow seen as evidence enough that he can compete for a starting berth"
- This is more than Kane had when he broke through. Also, see countless examples of good players who have come from relative obscurity (Mahrez, Kante, Vardy are three examples just from Leicester).
"Every time I watch him, he looks slow, cumbersome, lacking in agility, lacking in mobility and technically very underwhelming. He doesn't look anywhere near a top level potential player to me in the slightest."
- Kane didn't look anywhere close to being good enough three years ago. Young players do develop!
Sorry if I sound like an arrrrse, but...

I KNOW NOTHING OF HIM...SO WILL BACK THE CLUB AND HOPE THEY HAVE DONE THERE HOMEWORK.
Why is the op worried about who we sign, no indication that he is a Spurs supporter at all.
