More concerned about racial tension building in UK than the USA. At the moment I wouldn't want to walk through parks of West & South Yorkshire.
You should ask some of the USA based posters on here what the reality is. Would be insightful.
This is all part of the 'American Dream'. The land of the brave, and the home of the free.
I'd feel safer holidaying in the Middle East.
If the people didn't carry guns, the police wouldn't have to.
That's the root of the issue... not racism.
(which IS an issue, btw, but cases of death from white police to black citizens be immeasurably reduced)

I think there is an undercurrent of racism from some of the police in the US. Not all of them as a lot of them do a good job but there is absolutely some racism there and in no way should so many innocent black people be executed by over eager cops
As per my second comment, Robb
I saw the clip of the policeman pinning down that black guy and shooting him three times in the chest, was disgusting.
There are so many factors at play here.
Historic racial tension between the black and white communities in America.
Inherent racism without some elements of their police force.
Lack of gun control.
Large parts of the African American community glorifying gun/gang violence in their popular culture.
It's a recipe for serious civil unrest. Especially with the rise of social media.
Grim, can't believe you'd watch it

"Anyone who has been to the US will have found police to be humourless, almost robot like in their approach to communicating."
I never, I had a laugh with a couple of cops in Vegas, and my mate who was pulled over for doing 110mph on the way to the Grand Canyon got away with a small speeding fine, when he could have taken the car off him.
I'd imagine they are like police in the UK, treat them with respect and it will be reciprocated.
Regarding this shooting, the police were called out to a man who has previous gun crime records, he had a gun on him and he didn't cooperate. I'd agree they shot too soon, and he didn't deserve to be shot, let alone killed, however you aren't the one wresting a 200lb bloke with a gun.
Home of the brave, but where everyone needs to buy a gun to feel like they can protect their home.
Land of the free, but has the highest incarceration percentage of their population of any country in the world.
Land of the scared and cowardly and the home of those in chains. America's just a country sized advert.
Lack of gun control.

In a nutshell. I don't believe the police are racist, however, if faced with gun crime day in day out in gang areas, you're going to develop a certain prejudice.
America needs to sort out it's gun laws, only way to solve these issues.
Obama has tried so much to sort out the gun issues and he has never been allowed. Guns will always be around in America.

Thank you Robben,
The culture of gang violence is certainly an important contributing factor in this. One of many. Racism within the police force is another. Historic racism bred hatred and fear, hatred and fear facilitated the gun/gang culture, the gun/gang culture sent the fear full circle (insofar as the police being equally fearful of the empowered black communities), the mutual mistrust has been bubbling and escalating ever since. I don't want to make this about gun control, but that too is a huge factor in this - if there wasn't such a prevalence of firearms in America it would be much harder for cops to argue they feared for their lives in many of these situations. Incidentally, it would also go some way to reducing the fear some of these cops feel - I listened to the recording of the girlfriend of the victim yesterday, and the cops voice is clearly audible; he sound shocked and terrified. I certainly wouldn't want someone of his disposition armed and in a position of authority on our streets.
