Mustafi is definitely not an elite defender. He will certainly improve us, though. We aren't signing a striker, if we were, we would have signed Lacazette by now. Wenger is living in a dreamworld where Benzema (who is garbage) falls on his doorstep on deadline day like Ozil did 3 years ago, and when he realises that isn't gonna happen, it will be too late to go back in for Lacazette.
I've said the other day and I mean it even more now, that I hope we sign no more players, have a terrible season where we don't even qualify for the Europa League, and Wenger facks off. It seems the only way this club will move forward is by taking a few steps back and facking off this dictator for good.

Over exaggerating much?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not at all. Higuain went for £75m, CBs are being quoted at around £40-£45m.
I like Lacazette, and would like us to sign him. However to describe him as top quality I think would be erroneous at this time. Top quality is more in the Benzema, Lewa, Griezmann, Aubameyang bracket.
Lol Higuain is the exception, not the rule. Juve were mental enough to pay his buy out clause. Suarez aside, no striker has gone anywhere for close to that sort of money.

Yeah fair enough. It's a shiiit time to be a supporter, as a club we have so much potential but the way we're being held back financially while paying the highest prices in the League is a total shafting.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Science you raise an interesting point. The board realise that Wenger's days are numbered, so from there prospective it becomes a financial gamble to back a manager that may not be in charge this time next season.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I actually don't think that's why we're not signing players.
I believe it's a combination of things:
1. Wenger is deluded about the quality of some of his players.
2. Wenger and the board dont want to pay todays prices for top players.
3. The owner is sponging off the club and only uses us as an asset, which is worth more the more money is stock piled in our accounts.
4. Arsenal

to me wenger is a fraud i believe his main success was inheriting a first class defence from graham, i gave up with him after 2008 it was clear to me we were heading nowhere, until wenger leaves things wont change, the manager can never be bigger than the club , but this is what has happened at arsenal.

I heard this too - but if that's the case, why did we initially go for such a cheap option (in today's market) in £20m Vardy? We weren't expecting to spend £40-60m on a defender were we?

Only went unbeaten the whole season. Best defence Arsenal have ever had.
not the best defence in 1991 we conceeded 18 goals and lost just 1 game. the 2004 side was good but it just won 1 thing.out of europe as usual
No. Thats a misunderstanding of how we used to play under Graham. George used to setup teams not to concede first. That just didn't mean the back 4 were defending. The whole team was in a counter attack formation to defend first. Wenger changed that to a more possession based game where obviously the defence is challenged more because the full backs are expected to be far more involved in the attack to provide width. Compare Dixon, Winterburn to Ashley Cole and Lauren.
AW’s time at the club is coming to an end. It’s clear AFC need a change of direction.
But to suggest AW has been a “fraud” given he has dedicated 20yrs of his life to the club is somewhat pathetic.
wenger is a fraud any other club would have sacked him years ago, 9 trophies in 20 years is just average esp at a big club like arsenal, he earns 23 grand a day for failure, outrageous
Is there is any substance in the rumour about Draxler?
I am not going to create new thread, sick of our transfers.
Does this mean, Wenger will deploy/convert Draxler into forward/striker?
£43m in today's inflated market is not that bad imo.
Thoughts?

It’s comments like the above which give AFC fans such a poor reputation.
Okay, we’re all frustrated with the direction the club is going, and change is required. However AW is the club’s most successful manager, and the longest serving.
He could have left (on many occasions) to earn more elsewhere, and with a greater chance of winning silverware. He remained loyal to AFC while others jumped ship.
He may be many things but a “fraud” he is not.

I usually agree with a lot of our points, J99, but you're completely wrong on this one. The stats are the first thing that show you up; Graham's 1991 side scored more and conceded less in the same number of league games as the invincibles. It's also complete folly about Graham's early sides being defensive; in the four seasons from 1988-89 through to 1991-92, Graham's sides were top scorers in the league twice and 2nd top scorers in the league once (the 1991-92 season).
Graham setting his teams up to defend didn't begin until the first premier league season when, after being embarrassed by European opposition in the European cup the year prior, Graham changed the way in which the team were setup and the way in which they approached games because he thought that was a means of being successful in Europe.
This perception that he was always boring, though is as bad as the perception that Arsene's teams are always entertaining.
Wenger is not a fraud. He did a tremendous Job with us, and even did well in the time when we moved to the stadium, when we genuinely had no money. Not many managers could manage top 4 with those restrictions.
However its clear his time is done now. He should have gone after we won FA cup 2 years ago, left with his head held high, and we should have gone after Pep, or Klopp or someone when they were available. But the club massively lacks ambition, and is more than happy with the status quo of generating high income, with little investment. And wenger provides that. That won't want to risk income faltering slightly, or having to invest anymore. I think the owner and board would be happy to give wenger another 3 years

A top quality CB and striker.
Good CBs like Mustafi are rated at £35m, so to get top quality you would have to go higher.
A good striker like Lacazette would cost £45m most likely, Lukaku has been quoted at £60m, so imagine what a top quality striker would cost.
Higuain and Stones, for example, went for a combined £125m - and Stones wouldn't be classed as a top quality CB by many yet.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Considering Ashley Williams went for £12 million or something like that goes to show that it is still possible to find good value. Yes he is nearly 32 but would have done a good job for us for 3-4 seasons and far better then that overrated Stones who isn't even a half decent defender!
Ashley Williams has 2 more seasons at his current level max
Why sign Xhaka for 35m then if that meant we couldn't afford to strengthen the weaker areas of our team?

Ah, but the statement was that we should be embarrassed not to be able to afford top quality CB and striker. This was in reply to someone saying we are trying to save money on a CB so we can spend more on a striker.
We are looking for good value at CB, something the person objected to as we should be able to afford the very best in two positions on top of what we already spent.
