Apparently he can boot the ball out of defence nicely which makes him a world class defender. £50m for a clown, football eh?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

He's really not a clown. The guy is a good defender but his problem for England is that no one makes any runs for him so he has to hang onto the ball more than he should.

He's doing pretty well for City bar the odd mistake which will be ironed out by Pep.

Gotta love English people. For years they slate their team for having no technical ability and then when a very classy defender comes along they slate him for trying to play the way people have been crying out for.

This is why the players are scared to fail with such a harsh judgement waiting for them at home

Yup. That's what happens when you have contrasting styles in defence. He's been excellent for us.

...............

Good defenders can still defend Melton, no matter what the style is or who they play for.

You never saw Rio, Tony Adams or John Terry drop there levels of performance when playing outside of their clubs.

Stones is good by today's standards, mediocre by those.of the past.

He's about Jonathan Woodgate level.

Herrera is one of the biggest cowards in football. Always diving in recklessly trying to hurt players (which United fans somehow equate to 'passion' but somebody comes near him and he roles around like a biiiitch

Woodgate was a very good defender when fit (which was rarely)

Stones has a lot of improving to do

You didn't see them encouraged to use their keepers as an extra defender either though, the overall defending style was still similar. When Stones goes up for us, which he is encouraged to do, then Fernandinho goes into the position or the fullbacks narrow to create a three. It looked a lot to me like Southgate didn't do that with his fullbacks at all.

Yeah but Dier covered him.

Interesting to see Dier pointing the finger at Stones after he'd given the ball away by passing to Dier.

It was as if he was saying "now that is one risky pass you cannot do" (meaning to him, as he's the cover man.)
