Not a band but the most obvious overlooked musician for me is Todd Rundgren. Not only was his solo work incredible the influence the man has had and the number of records he's produced it very impressive.

Did someone mention riffs? How about you check out Agalloch for crushing melodic riffs. One of my all time favorite bands that apart from it's cult following, is sadly overlooked.

Opeth, Cave In and Pelican are brilliant btw. Will check out the other band you mentioned.

Slade?

Despite their popularity and commercial success in the 70's, it seems as if it's not that fashionable to rate them highly and instead dismiss them as just another glam rock group of their time, when they produced quite a lot of good songs.

Slade in Flame is a great movie too.

A quite underrated person because of her very fake look and poppy songs is Nikki Minaj.

No, she won't go down as one of the greats but when she puts her mind to it she's actually a very very good rapper.

I would love to think that she'd go down as one of the greats.

Don't ruin my dreams Robb

shout out to early mercury rev, i remember all the fuss over deserter's songs - which is ok, in parts, but no more - but their first 3 albums are blistering noise rock/jazz...bits of boces are some of the most aggressive music you will ever hear.

I'll throw Cocteau Twins in, seem to be more revered by their peers than the general public
