Ray Wilkins didn't impress us much at Old Trafford (everyone knows we called him The Crab). If you look at his goal in the 83 final against Brighton you'd think he was a world beater... Remi Moses was twice the player when he came in.

I adored Wilkins - just his range of passing. And I was lucky enough to live in Italy and see him play for AC Milan a few times too. He was awesome in Italy and France.
Goalkeeper - Gordon Banks, he had to be brilliant to keep The Cat from putting him as my number one!
Defender - got to get modern with this one, has to be JT for me.
Midfield - I've seen so many great midfielders I find it hard to differentiate.
Strikers - maybe Shearer but for shear elegance of play - Peter Osgood from a purely personal POV!
Cole is someone who played better at international level. In terms of performances in tournament football, I don't remember anyone performing at such a high and consistent level. His performance against Portugal when we were down to 10 for so long is probably the best individual performance I have seen. He absolutely had Ronaldo in his back pocket.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Ronaldo could never best him at club level either!
I've gone for best at their peak rather than longevity over a career:
GK: strangely I don't really recall Shilton that well despite seeming him play a fair few times. Seaman I guess for this one.
Defender: Ferdinand. At his best he was amongst the best CB in Europe imo.
Midfield: Gazza. Wonderful talent horribly wasted. Quite literally.
Forward: at his very best probably Rooney. He was genuinely talented when he was young. Pace, power, confidence and a hell of a strike on him. I know it's been said before but if only some of Ronaldo's drive and determination to be the best could have rubbed off on Wayne rather than him rubbing off some old granny.
Seaman
Terry
Beckham
Owen
Wish i was around in Bobby Moore's day to see the likes of him, Charlton and Hurst
Sheringham was fkin good as well, but Owen in his prime.. was unreal, still one of my fav players outside Chelsea.
Beckham the same for England, nobody could cross a ball like him or put a free kick in like him, was an excellent captain full of passion too who wore his heart on his sleeve.
Terry see above, real lion and an excellent defender. That diving header https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pGrQzo1ZKQ
Seaman was just excellent every time i saw him in England, never got people giving him stick for that Ronaldinho free kick, nobody on earth would have saved that
Always forget Owen won the Ballon D'or too
GK - Shilton
CB - Adams
CM - Robson just edging Hoddle
WG - Waddle
ST - Lineker
Notably none of them have played in donkeys years and we still haven't produced anyone better.
Jimmy Greaves - no question about it
This is tough for me because of my age, England have had far better players in the past...
Striker: Rooney - Top goalscorer. Just missed out on Owen's best years.
Midfielder: Gerrard - Great leader. Just ahead of Beckham and Lampard for me.
Defender: Cole - Very consistent player. Ferdinand deserves a shout. Campbell and Terry can die!
Goalkeeper - I didn't really see much of Seaman. James or Hart
Campbell and Terry can die!

Seaman
Rio Ferdinand
Gazza just shades Robbo and Scholes
Rooney just shades Shearer and Fowler
Peter Shilton
Bobby Moore
Bobby Charlton
Jimmy Greaves - by miles
Peter Shilton
Rio Ferdinand
Bryan Robson
Alan Shearer
Geoff Hurst > Jimmy Greaves
Not a tough question for me, so I'm not splitting it into positions. Nobody comes close to Paul Gascoigne. Bad decisions and ruined potential but as far as plain talent is concerned he wins hands down.
At his worst he was always enthusiastic, a live wire or a time bomb - at his brilliant best he was so totally unpredictable and exciting to watch.
Beckham comes close, and can't deny Gerrard or Lineker but Gazza takes it for me.
When you consider the players some other big football nations have produced and compare them to Paul Gascoigne it really is no surprise that we have never done well in tournaments

Hurst wasn't fit to lace Greaves drinks. Seriously Greaves was head and shoulders above any forward at that time. Had he not got injured Hurst would be a forgotten player as his club career wasn't anything special compared to Greaves who scored almost double for both club and country.

You were doing so well til you mentioned Beckham. I'd suggest Charlton , Scholes ,Lampard, Gerrard, we're all ahead of Beckham but none got close to Gazza for pure natural talent, effectiveness in a major tournament and confidence on the pitch. Shame about his demons in later years. I've always believed the booze numbed the pain of retirement
