The norm? You have challenged on both fronts twice this decade
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Edin our record since 2003 speaks for itself as does United's as does the other teams that have been winning the CL in recent seasons.
Chelsea reached 7 CL semi finals and won the league 5 times in the last two decades
Until you stop having a culture of looking for excuses for not winning trophies you will never become a sustainable serious threat, I guarantee you.
You can't reference historical teams with no active members in your current squad as a datum

Our squad has loads of CL experience Edin and so does our coaching staff. We have the culture and experience in spades of competing on two fronts.
And we will sign at least 4 players this summer and we now have good younger players like Ake and Chalobah who can step in..
We will be in very good shape unless Conte goes back to Italy.
I do not doubt that you have the experience or resource to compete in the CL. I just don't believe that this Chelsea side currently has the resources to compete on both fronts, and traditionally hasn't done so often.
Especially this season, you had a small squad, and the extra 10 or so games may have been the difference between an unfit/injured Hazard and/or Luiz.
Traditionally we have Edin, the record printed above speaks for itself.
Traditionally AC Milan always competed for the CL. The Chelsea teams that have competed on both fronts are in the past
steady on mate-season just finished and you are already writing off next season-lots to happen before then
-some may leave hdlsa-incl Costa/Keeper/hazard??
-some will leave Spurs=walker/Sissoko/Lamela?
-some will come in
-chelsea will have extra games.

There are so many times when we were 2nd or 3rd and in the semi of finals of the CL...ignore it if you wish, it doesn't bother me, if you think Spurs don't need to get to a level where they can challenge on both stages then good luck with that....
2003/04 CL Semi final, finished 2nd in the league
2004/05 CL Semi final, won the league
2005/06 CL Round 16, won the league
2006/07 CL Semi final, finished 2nd in the league

2010/11 CL Q/F, finished 2nd in the league
2011/11 Won the CL, finished 6th in the league
2012/13 Won the Europa League, finished 3rd in the league.

2014/15 CL Round 16, won the league
2015/16 CL Round 16, finished 10th in the league
2016/17 No CL, won the league
Don't forget Chelsea won 4 FA cups and 3 league cups during this period.

I have no excuse, Chelsea were the better team in the league.
It is the flippy flapping that has done me .
You have given me evidence, but what that shows is this...
1. When Chelsea have won the league, 4 of the 5 times they have not been past the first KO round of the CL. One of those times not in it at all.
2. When Chelsea have got to the 1/4s or further in Europe their record reads.....
2nd, 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 2nd, 6th, 3rd, 3rd.
One league win out of the 10 times
I am no statistician, but it looks to me that empirically Chelsea's title chances are vastly improved by less European games.
Some would say it gives them an advantage
Chelsea have been winning the league and maintained top 4 regularly, whilst winning 2 European competition , reaching the finals on three occasions and reaching semi finals on five occasions 5 in the European competition and winning five PL leagues, four FA cups and three league cups. Most would say there is overwhelming evidence that proves that the top teams can challenge for both trophies in the same season.
Not just in the PL, where Man Utd have proven on many occasions by winning the league and the CL. Other teams in Europe are doing it too.
Chelsea got very close to doing the double CL and the league on two occasions in 2004/05 and 2008/09.
Spurs hasn't got near winning a Europe competition or indeed the league for decades, never mind doing the double.
