Do we need to buy ?

Firstly you cannot take too much from an end of season run.
Secondly, I also think you cannot just get yourself stuck in one formation so still need variety.

I would say we need:

A #1 'keeper.
A top class CB.
A B2B midfielder to play alongside Xhaka.
A striker.

There are quite a few players I would trim from the squad, such as the obvious (Debuchy, Jenkinson), the surplus with the signings (Gibbs, Coq or Elneny, Gabriel, possibly Chambers). Would also consider any decent offer for the likes of Wilshere, Welbeck and Walcott - but prefer to keep.

Would like to see Bielik and Maitland-Niles promoted to the first team squad - and chances for Sheaf, Willock and Nelson at some time.

You will consider selling Welbeck but keep Giroud. Thank God don't manage Arsenal.

A fit Wilshere will be like a new signing.

It will also be like a visit from extra-terrestrial beings.

=====
Giroud has the second best strike rate in the PL this season, only bettered by Kane.

Welbeck has one more goal in his entire Arsenal career than Giroud scored this season - despite being 3rd choice

If he hadn't played for you lot...I'd take Welbeck at Spurs. Think he'd be a great option off the bench playing as a wide forward. His work rate would suit a Poch team and whilst he's certainly not clinical, he does seem to have a knack of scoring goals at big times (might be totally inventing that / no stats to back it up - but from what I've seen) and he keeps all defenders "honest".

Here will go again with statistics. Even ignoring the fact that Welbeck Arsenal career has been blighted with injuries his overall importance to how we play trumps Giroud.

Goals are very important stats!

Why would you ignore a career blighted with injuries? A fit player is always better than an injured one.

Saturday summed it up nicely. Welbeck 78 minutes of huff, puff, no quality and no result. Giroud 20 seconds of decisiveness.

And I tell you another thing, in the modern game the single most effective ingredient anywhere on the pitch is pace.
So much so that a brainless footballer like Theo can earn140k a week just because he can speedily run into space .
There are there loads of players in the French league that can easily replicate what Giroud brings to Arsenal.

posted on 30/5/17

So you would buy someone just to replicate what a player we already have does? Seems a bit pointless.

There are loads of players in League 1 with pace - maybe we should shop there.

I certainly think we should at least consider bringing in Mahrez, he wants to stay in the PL, not sure if CL is a must for him though ... would hate to see him end up at Spurs

You are being disingenuous. The hard work had already been done by Welbeck; he ran the channels and stretched Chelsea's back three freeing the spaces Ramsey and co enjoyed. You don't see that because you have a bias towards Welbeck.
If Giroud started, Chelsea back three would have camped on the halfway line all through the game.
While acknowledging Welbeck needs to improve his finishing, he brings more to the team than Giroud any day.

Giroud has 16 goals this season despite only starting 17 games. That is exactly what you want from a back up striker - not someone who "works hard" but delivers nothing.
Can only think of the Leicester goal that Welbeck has scored off the bench for Arsenal. Most of the time you need a sub striker is when the opposition are sitting back anyway.

The first part of the statement is being kind to the extreme. The second part is very questionable, considering goals win games.

Wouldn't it make more sense to sell Welbeck and sign a striker with similar physical attributes but is good at football rather than selling Giroud?

It's a guess. Nothing more.

Plus the whole point of buying a striker is that he would be the starter not Giroud or Welbeck

Rather risk Onyekuru as a back up than Welbeck. Giroud, Onyekuru cover for a shiny new star man would suit me.

Back to the article. Do we need to buy?

We can only answer that if we know who is going out. Disagree with DJ in saying we need a CB. We are well equipped in that area. Merte, Kos, Holding, Gabriel, Chambers comes back, wouldnt write off Bielik and Mustafi. If all goes wrong we can play Monreal there (assuming he is staying).

A new LB is already signed in Kolasinac. Maybe we need a RB as well.

An absolute must is a creative midfielder and a left wide player.

A new striker? Depends on the quality. A position where it is most difficult to find the right player because other clubs wont sell their best players.

The best 3 would be Per, Kos and Mustafi.
Per is at the end of his career and Koscielny has this long standing injury. Wouldn't expect either to give us a full season.
Holding shows some promise, but has a fair way to go.

Would quite happily upgrade on Gabriel, and I would let Chambers go. Bielik has a lot to learn, so a second half of season loan after appearing in the League Cup and Europa.

That leaves 4, plus Monreal.

We can easily upgrade in there.

Auba, Laca, Greizmannall look like leaving this summer for starters. Belotti looks attainable. There are loads of strikers on the move.

Who's replacing Sanchez?

posted on 30/5/17

Should we get Lacazetter? I haven't been following him at all, how much is he worth now, if he was worth £60M last summer?

posted on 30/5/17

He is going to Atletico if they get their ban lifted.
