Barça losing at home to Leganés is amazing
Club captain, 32-year-old Sergio González, had never played in the top flight until this season. Now he can tell his grandchildren his first-ever Liga strike was the winning goal in Lega's first ever away win against Barça.
Velez champs... I think
And in the LigaMX playoff final, America are currently 1-0 up in Monterrey, having won the home leg 2-1.
Speaking of LigaMX, last week referee Rosario Cárdenas was sacked by the Mexican FA's refereeing committee over an incident that took place back in October, when he failed to show up for a Monterrey-Tigres game back in October for which he'd been designated as the fourth official.
The committee initially reported that the no show had been due to 'medical reasons', but it later it emerged that on the eve of the game Mr Cárdenas had been drugged and robbed by a call girl he'd taken back to his hotel room with him.
Club América hold Monterrey to win LigaMX Apertura title.
by me.
(Includes highlights links)
Barely a couple of months ago, few people would have bet on Club América lifting the Apertura title, even despite their status as Mexican football royalty and reigning champions.
Having lost four of their opening six fixtures, in early October they spent most of the season bobbing around 10th place, locked in a battle to even make the post-season.
Despite the poor results, América's suits kept their faith in Brazilian coach André Jardine, who'd led the club to both the Apertura and Clausura titles in his maiden season at the helm.
Having found some late season form, they eventually finishing 8th, enough to qualify for the play-in, where they then needed a penalty shoot-out win against Tijuana in order to make the final bracket.
They seemed to click just at the right time, though.
After making like work of no.2 seeds Toluca, who they beat 4-0 on aggregate.
Having been held 0-0 at home by cross-city rivals and top seeds Cruz Azul, they twice led the winner-takes-all return leg by two goals, only to be pegged back to 3-3 with 4 minutes left. América eventually booked their ticket to the final in dramatic fashion, thanks to a 94th-minute penalty converted by Uruguayan forward Rodrigo Aguirre the lifted them to a 3-4 win. Having scored the winner, the second-half sub still somehow find the time to collect two bookings and rule himself out of the first leg of the final.
Onto the final, then, and in the first leg América needed to overcome a Sergio Canales' first-half golazo - https://youtu.be/cRD3QgVg_9k?t=69 - to beat Monterrey 2-1, thanks to this classy goal by Álex Zendejas: https://youtu.be/cRD3QgVg_9k?t=322
The slim lead left the final beautifully poised for last night's return leg in Monterrey.
After a pretty even start with chances on both sides and an América goal narrowly ruled offside, the visitors took a first-half lead through an absolute screamer by Paraguay international Richard Sánchez. https://youtu.be/XSgEVG8AaLM?t=233
In a pulsating encounter which could have easily tipped either way, Monterrey finally equalised in the 85th minute with a good goal from Colombian half-time sub Johan Rojas.
Monterrey pushed hard and even had a header come off the underside of the crossbar, they were ultimately unable to find a winner.

Even if you can't be bothered with the highlights, Sánchez's opening golazo is well worth a few seconds of your time. Here's the link again:
https://youtu.be/XSgEVG8AaLM?t=233
Of interest to La Liga fans, former Spain international Sergio Canales, now in his second season in Mexico, assisted Monterrey's equaliser last night. It capped a superb playoff contribution, in which, as well as scoring his side's goal in the first leg of the final, he also scored or assisted in every one of Monterrey's playoff games. Sadly for him, his efforts fell a fraction short of lifting Monterrey to the title.
Along with other recognisable names for La Liga fans, such as Canales' Monterrey teammates Lucas Ocampos (who missed the final through injury) and Óliver Torres, the presence of América's Jonathan Dos Santos, now 34, came as a real blast from the past.

I dunno what Pep feeds his players but they sure love to chat a lot of shiiit.
No love for the Sánchez goal then? Think it's a pretty decent effort as far as title-winners go.
I feel for the keeper, who managed to getting his fingertips on it - it's pretty agonising to see a goal go in off the post like that, but it also adds to the aesthetics of the strike.

To be fair it's buried halfway through the (excellent) report so didn't see the link. Better of a goal though, love it when they catch it that well.

Fwiw, I did fear the links might be missed, as I don't really think more than one or two people will be much interested, which is why I wrote the "(Includes highlights links)" comment at the top.
