Has The Quality In Football Regressed?

Lewandowski is as good as you can get as a no 9 right now, and to say he'd be no comparison to strikers 15 years ago is a joke. Bar Henry, the rest of them are the level of the current crop.
It's nostalgia which makes people think back then it was better. No one seems to remember the bad games retired players had, only the good ones.
When discussing current players, you tend to pick out their negatives first then positives, happens with Ronaldo and Neymar too.
Just look at the midfield Spain has had up till 2014, no country can ever match it except Spain themselves.

Not true, the rise of DMs like Makelele was the result of no 10s like Bergkamp, Cantona and Zola thriving with so much space playing against rigid 442 systems

Part of it is a lack of characters in football these days imo. There are less mavericks, leaders, artists and disciplinaries.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Not with the PC pundits we have these days.
A simple tweet from Mendy (bullet header) was picked upon by Gerrard and the next day, the whole press were after that tweet.
They literally chased Balotelli out of England simply for being a character.

just go through the catalogue of champions league games during the 2000s, countless examples of english teams outhustling the european sides with pace and power- its what we were known for.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Largely it was countering and outmuscling

Deserved wins

But it was a very different style to the styls in vogue today

Hence why English teams struggle
----------------------------------------------------------------------
i think english clubs have trouble with their identity, spain win the world cup so they thought lets follow their blueprint, then they saw germany win and thought lets follow their blueprint,

all i know is the champions league campaigns i was watching from 2000 onwards up to 2010 were not "very defensive".

Viallis Chelsea was my favourite Chelsea.

What a journey it would have been for you if you'd gone the City route of attack mania rather than the solidity and don't get me wrong incredibly successful 2 DM route, once Abramovich arrived.

The quality of the City v Liverpool game yesterday was pretty poor and they are two of the strongest teams in the world.

Chelsea's passing and decision making yesterday agst Leicester was some of the worse i have seen for a long time and we are the Champions.

Something has gone wrong in recent years....is it too much money buying average to decent players?

I don't know why tbh....

Vieira gave the ball away to Giggs.
A sad day for football.

Honestly people should re-watch games from the pass to have a reality check

I don't think money has anything to do with it.

It's just a pass through payment from large media deals. It doesn't impact the players themselves

What's this reality check we need?
Is it one of our teams actually performing in the CL rather than the utter dross performances we get to see now?

Football in the 90s is shocking. (watched a few 'classics' on TV last year)

It's like 2 completely p(ssed boxers trading blows in a mud pit

Some of the footage from PL years on Sky shows how village some of the football used to be.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
A bit like some now
Did you watch the two games today in the 'Not So Super Sunday'?
