What is the Nations league?

A competition to make your brain hurt like no other.

The Nations League is an international competition that splits UEFA nations into 4 leagues based on their UEFA coefficient.

The 4 leagues are then split into 4 groups of 3 (League A and B) or 4 (League C and D) nations.
The teams in each group play round robin games.
The winners of each group go into a League Championship play-off.
The bottom team of each league will be relegated into the division below, replaced by the 4 winners of the groups in the league below.

The winners of the play-offs will win a Euro Championship place.

This happens every two years, 2018-19 the first, 2020-21 the second.
Euro and World Cup qualification will then be the year after (2019-20 and 21-22 for example)

I don't know how the International teams get away with disrupting the Prem like they do. Its one thing when your player gets injured playing for the club that pay his wages but when its for their country in the middle of the season its a disgrace (especially if its a friendly). Play all qualifiers at the end of the season and begin the new season in September. This is a win win situation as we would never have a summer without football and Kane doesn't score in August.

Why is there an article like this every international break for the last 5 years ffs

I don't like the idea that we have 2 International breaks so early in the season. 2 International breaks within the first 8 games of the season. They should separate them into every 10 league games for the major leagues that play more than 30 games a season. 4 International breaks, 1 within 10 games, then 20, then 30 and then in the last 8 games as well.

The most annoying one is when they are just boring friendlies, that's frustrating.

Int football needs a revamp. Vast majority of England games are against nobodies. It's boring.

What's the point of England beating nobodies to become a nobody at championships.

It would help the national teams as well as they'd get some consistency as they play consecutive matches.

And we can pay the England manager on a part time basis.

This is how the Nations League may look judging on current standings (lots of room for movement, and actual groups will be drawn from 3 or 4 seed pots)

LEAGUE A
Group 1 - Germany, England, Poland
Group 2 - Portugal, Switzerland, Croatia
Group 3 - Belgium, Italy, Wales
Group 4 - Spain, France, Netherlands

There will be a round robin of 4 games. 4 group winners will go into semi finals. 4 bottom placed teams will be relegated to League B for the 2020-21 season.

LEAGUE B
Group 1 - Iceland, Sweden, Turkey
Group 2 - Russia, Ukraine, Ireland
Group 3 - Slovakia, Bosnia, Denmark
Group 4 - Northern Ireland, Austria, Hungary

LEAGUE C
Group 1- Slovenia, Scotland, Bulgaria
Group 2 - Albania, Montenegro, Norway, Cyprus
Group 3 - Czech Rep, Serbia, Israel, Estonia
Group 4 - Romania, Greece, Finland, Azerbaijan

LEAGUE D
Group 1 - Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Andorra
Group 2 - Belarus, Faroe Islands, Kazakhstan, Kosovo
Group 3 - Georgia, Latvia, Liechtenstein, San Marino
Group 4 - Armenia, Luxembourg, Malta, Gibraltar

I couldn't give a sh-t about qualifiers, most of the time they're on I don't watch them. International tournaments are fun, the suns out and good excuse to have a few drinks. Friendlies should be scrapped all together, no one really cares about them anymore and financially they don't make much. League cup should be scrapped too, what other European league has 20 teams in the league, 2 cups and no winter break?

How are Netherlands in League A DJ? They are ranked lower than some of those League B teams like NI or Slovakia.

It could be seen as an advantage to NI, who are already (I believe) guaranteed a playoff spot for the WC to lose their next two games to ensure they fall into League B and get a better chance of qualifying for the Euros.

or maybe trying to win the games and get into League A and then when a majority of the other teams in league A qualify through regualr group play, NI are the last team standing?

Urrrgggh who thought this nonsense up?

The League Cup is a beautiful thing as is the FA Cup, ask any of these teams from the northern and Southern counties leagues who have to go on a journey of countless qualifiers just to play Bury or Blackpool

UEFA killed International football, by expanding the CL to be opened to elite teams winning year in year out!!

Netherlands are ahead of Northern Ireland and Slovakia. Remember it is the UEFA rankings not FIFA.

Because they are wrong. Argentina vs some 3rd world cocaine farmers is sheit.

The South American format is the best there is, and even the worst team takes points here and there - Argentina drew 1-1 with Venezuela last time out.
