The majority of times a player isn't blooded as a 17 year old is not because he is not good enough. It is usually he isn't physically ready, mentally ready or needs to develop his game further.

We don't have the necessary means to properly test and prepare those players who are no longer eligible at U18 level.
The reserve league in England is a complete and utter farce. The quality isn't anywhere near good enough, there aren't enough games at that level and sometimes players don't play any competitive football for a month.
How can players realistically be expected to step up to first team level when this is the case?
The reserve league format has been changed more times than I can remember in the last decade or so. The Premier League/FA haven't a clue.
This for me is a key issue.

Yeah, I like the "B" team in a league structure idea that Spain and Germany use.
Loans are useful to an extent, but a parent club lose control of the development of a player, players can lose a bit of faith trying to fit in a set up very different to the one of their parent club, and players on loan can slip behind players who stay when injuries or cup games hand out opportunities.

That muppet Stuart Pearce on The debate stating that managers plying their trade in the PL should feel obligated to play English players
Surely racism on a small degree? “You’re in the country so must develop players from this country”
City signed a lot of foreign players during his reign...
Exactly. Trash like M’penza spring to mind. Pretty sure that had he taken them down the chairman wouldn’t have said “oh well you gave a couple of English players a chance so it doesn’t matter”.
The issue is coaching. That’s been the issue for at least 20 years. None of these enforced quotas are going to fix this, which is probably the reason why some of these clubs are now resorting to underhand signings of foreign youths in order to get them in early and turn them into homegrown players.
Italy's not a great example, they've got even bigger issues with youth development than we have. Especially at the big clubs, where they get loaned out for about five years before playing.
Forcing clubs to have English players will just mean they'll sign more token English players to meet squad rules.
More needs to be done to increase the talent pool, but I don't think the amount of money flying about the pren bodes well for clubs helping with this when it comes to senior football as they can just buy proven players.
The FA, the premier league and the clubs all have different goals which makes putting things together for the benefit of English football very problematic.
Of course, I’d imagine there are plenty of examples of Berardi who are co-owned by a big club but are forever playing for someone else.
Yeah and most of them with Juve, Inter and Milan. They hoard players more than Chelsea.
Juve have 52 facking players out on loan.
The loan system in Italy is an absolute joke.
The homegrown rule means any decent English talent is overpriced and overhyped. A b team league is a far better idea.
"It isn't about forcing teams to play Brits. It is about developing players so they are good enough - and have the right mentality - to make them the better option."
I don't agree with this.
Harry Kane was good enough (as we now know) but Spurs bought Soldado.
Rashford was good enough but United have spent a fortune on new signings.
These two were lucky through circumstance.
How many players are the top clubs missing out on, because their manager doesn't have the bottle to try playing with youngsters from time to time?
It's a fallacy that foreign signings are always the better option and that our kids are not good enough.
They're just wasting away in academies, at present.
Just because a player doesn’t make it through the academy they’re initially in, it doesn’t render them as failed footballers that can’t make it anywhere else. It’s got nothing to do with ‘bottle’, it’s about determining if the players in question are ready to make the step up at that time. Unless of course you’re suggesting that all managers should refrain from signing players and just throw all the youths in and see what happens?
Ledders-I must confess my love for Neo,I've dreamed of his manhood in my face smelling of B.O.He fills my rear end with his cream, the rest is bottled just like Spurs title dream. (U20121)
Of course it's related to bottle.
Many managers would rather take a foreign player with experience of playing top flight football then try a young player at the club.
Why? Because they want the finished article.

It’s common sense. Why would you play a player who’s not yet ready for the step up as opposed to buying one who is? As a manager you’d want the best team available and as a fan I’d want that too.
If managers were going to show ‘bottle’ on a consistent basis then:
United should be using Fosu-Mensah instead of buying Bailly or Lindelof, should be playing Wilson instead of buying Lukaku.
Chelsea should have gave Solanke a new deal and not signed Morata.
Arsenal should have never signed Sanchez as they had Campbell.
Spurs should have ignored Eriksen as we had Townsend.
What would be the point in hiring scouts and using them if they should all be showing bottle by throwing in kids who aren’t ready to make the step up? Every club who signs a player undoubtedly already has a player in their youth squads or academy who plays in that same role, so they should keep their money for other purposes and then play the kid no?

Wilson for Lukaku? Townsend for Eriksen?
And you want to talk about common sense? Hypocrite.

"Why would you play a player who’s not yet ready for the step up as opposed to buying one who is?"
1. You won't know if he's ready to step up for sure. It's a matter of opinion, which is why bottle comes into it.
2. Because those players have the potential to be better than an average foreign player who has reached his peak.
United should have been giving FSM more game time as opposed to buying players like Darmian, yes.
"What would be the point in hiring scouts and using them if they should all be showing bottle by throwing in kids"
It's not one or the other.
It is possible to do both you know.
The problem is that the top clubs are almost completely ignoring their youth systems at present. Spurs are the only ones who don't meet that description at present.
Try engaging your brain - it's not a complicated point.

What is ridiculous about it?
1. You won't know if he's ready to step up for sure. It's a matter of opinion, which is why bottle comes into it.
- Yes it is a matter of opinion, so if the manager in question doesn’t feel that said player is ready, that’s not a lack of bottle, it’s his opinion based on what he’s seen and what he needs.
2. Because those players have the potential to be better than an average foreign player who has reached his peak.
- Clubs don’t exclusively buy players who’ve reached their peak though do they? Nor are they always foreign. Clubs often buy players who are further ahead on their development than a player already on their books but still have room for improvement - which was why I referenced the examples of Wilson/Lukaku and Townsend/Eriksen.
What would be the point in hiring scouts and using them if they should all be showing bottle by throwing in kids"
It's not one or the other.
It is possible to do both you know.
- I know it’s possible to do both, which is exactly what clubs are doing at the moment. You’re here implying that clubs are bottling putting in the youths yet you don’t know if they’re good enough at the moment or have the potential to be good enough in the future in these cases so how can you be certain it’s a case of them bottling it?
The problem is that the top clubs are almost completely ignoring their youth systems at present. Spurs are the only ones who don't meet that description at present.
- Maybe just maybe, in the opinion of the manager, something you alluded to in your first point, the players in the academy aren’t actually ready to play at the moment? There’s no point in using the academy players for the sake of ticking a box as such, because if the player clearly isn’t ready at that moment in time it’s detrimental to the team, the manager and the played involved.
Ledders-I must confess my love for Neo,I've dreamed of his manhood in my face smelling of B.O.He fills my rear end with his cream, the rest is bottled just like Spurs title dream. (U20121)
It's ridiculous because I'm not suggesting that clubs should scrap transfer altogether, am I?
If you can't decipher between foreign transfers of average players and marquee signings like Lukaku then you've no place in an adult conversation.
To counter your points:
1. Yes, it's down to the Manager's opinion. But if the Manager's opinion NEVER involves trying youth, what does that tell you? It tells you he has no interest in developing youth into the first team - I put that partly down to bottle.
2. Where did I say clubs exclusively buy players at their peak?
I remind you - I am NOT talking about all transfers.
"I know it’s possible to do both, which is exactly what clubs are doing at the moment."
No, it isn't.
How many players can you name from United, City, Chelsea and Arsenal who have come through the youth set up and are regular starters?
I refuse to believe that Chelsea, for example, haven't had a single player in the last ten years that would be good enough to be a regular part of their team.
If you think talent at these clubs is that bad then fine, but at least put your point across without the stupidity that you're currently doing.
Oh, one last thing.
Your belief that Managers know what they're doing... why was Kane not getting a look in at Spurs then?
I wonder how many players like Kane and Rashford have fallen by the wayside because clubs weren't giving them a chance.

You mean the striker who scored the only goal in the U20 World Cup final
My view on this is 3 fold.
1. second teams in the league NEEDS to be re-examined if you want to make an impact. There are frankly many league clubs who are against it for perosnal reasons but i nthe end if a league 1 club with small average gates hosts LFC second team and 7k fans travel or whatever then everyone wins. TV moeny would also increase to them. IMO theres no issue with adding 10 teams to the league to do this what so ever.
2. Foreign player bans are counter productive.
3. The issue is not about money but rather about short termism. If you get on average about 18months in a job then can you trust a young player who needs 2 years work to be a very good player or do you buy a guy to do the job today. Look at alexander arnold. How many LFC fans are shouting he can't defend?
Look at eddie howe at bournemouth. Is he a bad manager cos he bought jordan ibe and is working on him as a player but bournemouth are not progressing up the table and are constantly struggling? Nope.
The issue is not about money but rather about short termism. If you get on average about 18months in a job then can you trust a young player who needs 2 years work to be a very good player or do you buy a guy to do the job today.
-
Which IS money. Clubs don't risk bringing through players because the need for instant impact is directly related to their bottom line. The billions pumped into the league have not helped national game.

The England U20 World Cup winning Calvert-Lewin will see more game time, because his boss never got a striker in.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I'be struggled to warm to him as a striker. Thought he was right back watching him play for Everton.
Or am I thinking someone else?
Did he play right side?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well you didn't watch him up front at OT then.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I did.
I meant to say did he play right side early on in the season
Thought he was a bit clumsy. Not criticising. Looked a bit Carlton Palmer though, to me.
Wanchope with no panache. A bit leggy.
He's only young though
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You mean the striker who scored the only goal in the U20 World Cup final

Nope.

Which IS money. Clubs don't risk bringing through players because the need for instant impact is directly related to their bottom line. The billions pumped into the league have not helped national game.
