Joe Biden has played down the chances of brokering a post-Brexit free trade deal with the UK, as he held talks with Boris Johnson at the White House.

Downing Street said its priority was still getting a deal with the US alone.

But the BBC understands that UK ministers are now considering joining an existing North American trade pact instead of pursuing a separate deal.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It was always going to be difficult, given the huge regulatory differences.

One might expect a competent government to complete an impact assessment. How diverging from existing regulatory frameworks, might impact long established UK/EU supply chains.

FTA's mainly deal with goods, and agri-foods (removal of tariffs) but given tariffs have been steadily reducing, the benefits of any FTA the UK brokers with any regional trade bloc would be nominal. As the UK has been moving to a service based economy over the last number of decades. I recall David Davis mentioning that a FTA with the US would remove tariffs from the UK service sector

The argument of leaving the EU (internal market) and offsetting the loss of market access by brokering FTA's across the globe is for the birds.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Morning mate.

You make too much sense, but one question.

Does it benefit the Uk and USA to do a trade deal?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Depends on how much regulatory harmonisation both partners are willing to agree to. US wants UK to align with its standards, so it can gain greater access to our markets. Especially on food and drink.

The UK wants to salvage as much market access with the EU as possible. It cannot however align itself with both the EU and US as both have different frameworks.

Ceding to USTR demands will mean less access to the EU's internal market. Which has underpinned the UK economy for decades.

IMO a US FTA should be well down the line of IDT's objectives.

The government is looking to water down agri regulations because we now cannot compete with Australian laws (or lack thereof) we are dancing along to their tune with no say.

To have a trade deal with the US we will need to along with their regulatory authority, with no say.

Fack me, this stuff is basic

Because it is a FTA (a lower level of market access arrangement) and will never replicate the benefits of an internal market.

BTW the Aussie deal is still being negotiated.

We voted for MEPs

We knew who they were (one of ours is particularly famous)

What EU rules did you have to obey?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why are trade barriers put in place now regarding trade, when uk joined the EEC to enhance trade?

Because the EU wants to be a political union and superpower too, moving away from the original ethos.

Its just a big capitalist club and if you disagree with them, they act with spite, imo.

Sadly, we are represented by boris and i acknowledge flaws in the leave argument, but it is done now, so we move on and do deals with the EU and rest of the world, as usual.

With the way some go on about the EU it's a miracle some of the other 180+ countries manage to prosper so well without being part of this magical entity.

With the way some go on about the EU, it's a miracle it's grown to be the biggest trading bloc in the world with nations globally clamouring to get a trading deal with it, in line with its regulations.

You do derail the thread by spamming enough comments to fill a page, often replying to yourself

I don't really accuse you of whataboutery... That's something others do though and it's fair in my eyes

I know that may get under your skin but my reply to hector is neither detailing or whataboutery so not sure what your trying to achieve by saying that (maybe more derailing)

Patronizing.

So we should not do a deal with America?

Just do not bother trying, while others gloat that the uk might not be able to do a trade deal with them??

I get boris and brexit has been a bollox, but now some are saying, haha, uk rejected by Biden on a trade deal, and we do not want a US trade deal anyway, LMAO.

That is some twisted thinking.😂😂

We should never have wanted a US trade deal, because it creates further barriers with the EU.

That has been explained to you by multiple posters.

The person who wants one is Boris, because he's a little Englander who thinks we have far larger pull on the global scale than we do, it takes situations like this to open his eyes that our role in the world is much diminished as a result of Brexit.
