Treasury minister Chris Philp says no business with under 500 staff will be subject to business regulation

What the feck does this even mean
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Does that include tax regulation? If so you can call me bmcl1987 Ltd from now on 😃

Pawl in tears
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Tears is a bit strong but I shall miss it if it goes.

I thought their coverage at the Labour conference was excellent as they accepted that it was a success without having their tongues up Starmers rathole like most other news channels/programmes. Also they did lots of interviews with Labour mp's who probably wouldn't have agreed to go on the channel under normal circumstances so hopefully they have changed a few perceptions of what they are about.

QT on Thurs night was a hour long party political broadcast for the Labour party. I don't watch it every week these days because since partygate that has been the case virtually every time I've seen it.

If anybody still thinks that the media is right wing biased then they can't watch too much news or political shows on the main channels.

Just a cursory scan of the comments sections on social media are seeing the usual gammons saying things like ‘Truss deserves credit for listening to the British public, she’s a credit to the country’.

The cognitive dissonance is incredible.

Most normal people won't forgive them.

Truss has managed to turn a global inflationary crisis to a UK one. No one will remember that interest rates were going up anyway after years of QE around the world. They will only remember that the high rates were caused by Truss's tax cuts. She has become the face of the farce. Can't see her lasting tbh. The crash in the housing market hasn't even started.

- "Why?"
- "I don't accept your characterisation."

I know it's anecdotal but I know two Tory voters who are done with them for the foreseeable due to the optics of the 45p rate scrapping (and to a lesser extent the bankers bonus cap lifting) It was such a cash grab for the rich that most Tory voters fell under the threshold and to an extent felt excluded. I've not spoke to my mate who is a donor with a net worth in high tens on millions, but I can't imagine the interest rate raises having to go higher to offset damage has him particularly pleased due to some of his businessess using debt to fund projects.

i wonder how pre-thatcher (neo-liberal economics, etc) Tories would do now with the electorate ?

As a Tory voter I believed we couldn’t follow Sunak due to the inevitable downturn and general malaise that would surely lead to a quick and deep recession.

Their antics as a party over the past 3-4 years have been embarrassing and damaging and I’ve turned my head away in oft times disgust. The 45p tax cut is indeed a bridge too far and is morally reprehensible. I’m glad it’s been stopped. I don’t care why or how; just that it is.

When I look to see if there’s another party that best represents me, my family, what I see as a future; there’s nothing there.

The political party scene in the UK is now a desert to me.

What I rail against now is the lazy and pathetic stereotyping of millions of “ordinary” or “normal” people because they simply had or have different aspirations or beliefs. We all want a better country at the end of the day.

And I genuinely don’t get this capping of bankers bonuses. They are employed to assess and take risk with money that isn’t theirs. That’s their job.

There will always be losses and gains in a role like that and I wish more businesses took assessed risks at times. If the rules on how much or how high a risk has to be changed then do that. Don’t discourage them from doing what they are skilled at. It’s a nonsense.

I get you. Though I might take issue with(albeit I believe you want this):

"We all want a better country at the end of the day."

There are lots of disaster capitalists, or those whose only real interest is in increasing their own wealth. So much so anything that leads to a cut in benefits is a vote winner.

So I think the status quo up until a few weeks ago was there is a bankers bonus cap in place, so I would pose the following question; what evidence is there that capping bankers bonuses has negatively impacted performance, and what evidence is there that removing the cap will lead to improved performance?

FWIW I don’t think the cap had any meaningful impact on banking performance or risk taking; ring fencing and beefed up capital &liquidity requirements along with more frequent stress testing far more significant influencers on how banks operate.

And that’s before we get into how “good” performance is measured and over what time horizon, particularly with a non-homogeneous group of investors.

The problem is risk is often massively miscalculation. In financial crisis of 2008 banks like RBS lost more in a single year than the sum total of inflation adjusted profits since the formation of the bank 200 or so years earlier. Those bonuses are long since spent.
