I loved The Hobbit. I like the Lord of Rings, but struggled with it for large parts as a kid.

I actually prefer the Lord of Rings films to the books. Opposite was round with Harry Potter though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have flip-flopped on the films. I think the first two are brilliant, the third is weak overall.

The books I can understand can be a bit much of a slog for some people. I find overall their messages, themes, characters and world are fantastic. They practically invented the fantasy genre.

He pretty much did.

But other authors have gone beyond him I feel, as much as I love the LOTR books off the top of my head I can think of four other fantasy series I prefer

Joe Abercrombies First law series

Robin Hobbs realm of the elderlings

A song of Ice and fire (incomplete obviously)

And for more high fantasy: Malazan book of the fallen.

I am enjoying reading The Witcher stories
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The first book was great, the story gets a bit lost I feel as the books go on.

I am reading the short story collections, not sure about the novel trilogy

Hey BH, whilst you’re here and as we’re on the subject of books, have you ever read The Second Sex?

It has been on my reading list for a loooong time, but I’ve always put it off (solely because of its sheer size really!).

But wow; what an incredible, incredible work, and so far ahead of its time. I’m beginning to look at Sartre quite differently now.

I have not checked these out - I have enjoyed GOT but I have heard the jump between characters as being quite difficult. Might be worth a read though!

I would recommend The Wizard of Earthsea, it was one of my favourite books as a kid, and has a lot of interesting and nice messages. Very different kind of book, but The Moomins are fantastic, would be definitely something I read to my kid one day.

The only thing I have read from her was The Blood of Others, which is a nice work of fiction.

After reading some Sartre and Heidegger I was put off existentialism and phenomenology for a while! I found both far too obscure, often using very circular arguments for their points. Heidegger even defends this in Being and Time.

I do really need to check her work out, as I have heard it is a much more insightful and interesting read than Being and Nothingness and Being and Time.

I would very much recommend The Human Condition by Hannah Arendt – probably my favourite book ever to be honest! It manages to synthesize aspects of conservativism to values of pluralism, freedom and critiques of capitalism. It ties together Aquinas, Machiavelli, Marx, Lock and Aristotle – covering social economic issues, alienation, technology and even interstellar travel!

If it manages to make you look at Sartre a little differently, then I will have to give it a go. Although, I don't think I will ever agree on his ideas of freedom to be honest. Arendt is much clearer and interesting on that topic.

Arendt made me view Heidegger differently, I still do not really understand him when reading it, but it sheds a lot of light as to why he is considered the greatest continental philosopher.

"### The UK government has been accused of infringing democratic rights to free and fair elections by failing to act on the findings of the Russia report.

_by Jack Peat_

The British government has until 26th April to respond to ‘credible allegations’ brought by a group of cross-party MPs over alleged Russian interference in the Brexit referendum.

Labour MP Ben Bradshaw, Green Party MP Caroline Lucas and Alyn Smith of the Scottish National Party (SNP) have lodged a claim with the Strasbourg court after the High Court in London rejected the case in 2021.

They say the failure of the Government to investigate allegations of interference in the UK electoral system, or to have in place a “legislative and policy framework that will identify and protect against interference in the UK electoral system”, breaches its obligations under Article 3 of Protocol 1 to the European Convention on Human Rights – which protects the right to free and fair elections.

In a letter to the group of MPs, the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has accepted the claim through the first stage of the court’s process and says it now requires the UK Government to respond to five questions by the end of April.

Here’s Peter Stefanovic’s report on the matter:"

Was excited by this until I saw it was from Stefanovic

Latest episode of the news agents podcasts looking at the toxic culture in the Met and the individual they had on is suggesting that there will be many more cases involving abuses of power by met police officers coming to light over the next few years. Just yesterday we had this story;

Met Police: Ex-officers accused of indecent images of children plot https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-64586853

Certain folk on this site have railed against criticism of the institution of the Met Police. I would be keen to hear their thoughts now. Do they still believe it’s “just a few bad apples”?

Yeah, although I haven’t read any Heidegger yet, I’ve heard about this defence courtesy of Stephen West, who’ll have no truck with it!

I wasn’t clear in which way Beauvoir has made me feel a little differently about Sartre, but I guess it’s primarily contextual. From Beauvoir’s writing, Sartre was clearly (and unsurprisingly) a massive influence on her, and I hadn’t until now been able to consider fully the extent of her influence of him.

I think I’ll have to plough back through Being and Nothingness again and (at least some of) the Roads to Freedom.

And will add Arendt’s book to my (growing ) list - thank you.

The perspective jumps don't bother me at all, I think it's pretty common in fantasy these days, certainly each series I listed has it.

In fact the malazan books don't just jump POV, each book takes place in a different place, eventually all coming together to tell an enormous narrative. It's complicated.. I've read the series three times and notice something new each time!
