Lineker downplayed the Holocaust?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Holocaust began in 1933 so to compare the current GB government policy to 1930's Germany is making a comparison.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, there's plenty of reading about how the roots of fascism take hold, and it isn't much of a stretch to draw similarities with the language and rhetoric of these policies, and this government (along with Trump).

That's not downplaying anything. That's a reasonable interpretation of events.

Got the start date of Holocaust as 1941…
----------------------------------------------------------------------

So?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So it didn’t begin in 1933 as was asserted above 🤷‍♂️
----------------------------------------------------------------------
30th Jan 1933.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That was when Hitler was appointed as chancellor. You get that’s different right?

Might help if Pawl defines what he sees as the holocaust for us.

Most Historians agree that is the date it started.

Even if you don't want to accept that I'm sure you can accept that Hitler was putting the pieces into place in the 1930's.

Trying to give Lineker an out on this is pretty shoddy he's banged to rights.

I do think the comparison is extreme, as there are a lot of differences between the two.

But I do think she should be careful with the kind of language she uses.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's been conflated a little by Satters "long post"

Which was talking about 1940s Germany, when the comparison was about 1930s Germany (specifically i suspect talking about the ramping up of the rhetoric, and it building towards the "final solution"

I'd agree it's an extreme comparison with regards to where Nazism went, but I think it's fair to draw comparisons with how it started, how the division was initially stoked.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The thing is that up until Hitler got into power, Germany's right was far more ideologically extreme and politically violent than anything found in the UK today.

Lebensraum and eugenics were key to Germany's ideology at the time, and this just isn't present in the UK's motivation to prevent the crossings.

The comparison to Germany really misses what is most important over the government's rhetoric - that its a deliberate attempt to cause friction with the ECHR and to challenge human rights in general. Which is dangerous enough without making parallels to 1930s Germany.

There’s an argument it began with Kristallnacht in November 38

But I do agree with those concerned that the overton window is shifting to the right. Labours response to this bill is to really just criticise its effectiveness and not make a moral case as to why it's wrong.

Google what date did the Holocaust start.

It's very simple and will give you the date of 30th Jan 1933.

Don't know why some folk have such a problem accepting this?

Landau, Ronnie S. (2016) [1992]. The Nahtzi Holocaust: Its History and Meaning. London: I.B. Tauris. ISBN 978-1-78076-971-4.

That’s where the 41-45 date comes from.

Final Solution Wannsee Conference - January 20, 1942.

Regardless of when it began, the language used by our government today in regard to migrants and asylum seekers is similar to that regimes 'othering' the most vulnerable in society.
Let's all get more aerated over pundit Lineker rather than our Home Secretary Braverman

Dachau Concentration camp opened March 22 1933. Jehovah's Witnesses, homosexuals and emigrants were sent to Dachau after the 1935 passage of the Nuremberg Laws which institutionalised racial discrimination

I think you’ll find that it absolutely did.

Remembering Cochise of the Apache who resisted “westward expansion” into the lands “which had long been home” to his people until the “Europeans arrived”. Read that twice and think about that…

America a land stolen from the Native American by the Anglo invaders

Wait until you find out what the conquistadors did in South America....

Also worth saying that their were a variety of European colonies in North America, including French and Dutch.

However, I don't want to downplay the atrocities that were committed against the North American native peoples, or the continued discrimination that they receive today. Regardless of Peks weaponisation of this for his own bizarre political purposes, what the US government did to those people was and remains an outrage.

What you could reasonably argue is that the beginnings of the Holocaust can be traced back to when the nahtzis came to power. In terms of the specific extermination of the Jewish people by the nahtzis, that would be early 40s. Someone above mentioned the night of broken glass (so I don’t butcher the spelling) as the commencement of the physical mistreatment of Jewish people.

Wiki, for what it’s worth, noted that Dachau was originally built as an internment camp for Hitlers political opponents, as opposed to Jewish people.

Comparing anything to the natsis is problematic and linekers comment was clumsy but it's obvious to me he wasn't talking about the Holocaust and the backlash against him from the Tory donors in the BBC is grubby and dangerous

“UK-focused Harbour had warned in January that it was to make head office workers in Aberdeen redundant in direct reaction to the hike in the levy, announced by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt in November last year.”

Sacking staff at HQ left, right and centre in attempts to “cut costs by $40m this year”. Meanwhile, pays out $553m in the previous year to shareholders.

Just facking sickening.

We aren’t talking about extreme, outlying behaviour by one rogue unethical multibillion dollar business in one particular domain here.

This is EXACTLY the kind of behaviour that the system is designed to promote and then rewards, across industries.

It’s indefensible, and it has to be stopped.
