Great to see that the governments climate strategy is the same as the one for trade barriers
Rely on a technology that doesn't exist yet to bail them out.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
The same government that's bragging about the trans Pacific trade deal as a superb example of a Brexit bonus. Leaving a trade deal that's resulted in a drop of 4% in GDP for one that, at very best, maybe be worth O.8%.
Depressing that mugs in the electorate will believe this is a Brucie and still trust them though.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You and your optimistic statements, Hector. I read a 0.08% bump to the economy, from the government's own figures.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh it is a 'potential' bump, just a bump we might be getting from one trade deal after binning another, 3.2% bigger and better one with countries on our doorstep.
I am genuinely optimistic about most things, just not currently under this hateful executive.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
3.92% bigger Hec.
Leaving the EU cost 50 times what CPTPP might return.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Arithmetic is not my strong point.
GDP is one measure of the futility of Brexit but how is reputational damage measured?

San Francisco actually having a serious discussion about reparations though
Shame it isn’t happening on a national (or even international) stage, and we shall see where it goes; but credit to the lawmakers there for having what appears at least to be an open and honest discussion, and one involving the right people, about what is both politically and socially an unfathomably painful subject.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I do wonder if Portugal have ever bothered to pay reparations for their huge involvement in slavery.
Or if the locals of San Francisco pay much mind to the higher amount of slaves in the world today as opposed to 200 years ago

Not gonna lie, I'm not au fait with the arguments around reparations.
Is it about compensating the relatives of those poor souls kidnapped from Africa or is it about the legacy racism that African-Americans have endured based upon the 2nd class experience they have been judged by ever since?
I don't mean to be ignorant but surely those that benefited financially from the former, the plantation owners and the sugar cane companies, for example, are the ones that are liable whereas it's much more difficult to determine who is compensated for the latter.

Slavery happened, its legacy is arguably still with us today, isn't it better to air its consequences and deal with it now things, in general, are much better rather than blanket sweep it under the carpet?
Today's slavery, appalling though it is and where discovered should be rightfully punished with the full force of law, isn't the industrial, legal, highly profitable system that it was. Today's unfortunate slaves aren't legal property, for example.
Like I say, I haven't a clue about the ins and outs and I'm just spouting my basic instincts.

Generally-speaking, I think it’s primarily the former but also the latter.
During the SF discussion, some have argued that the city of SF and its residents weren’t involved heavily in the slave trade or plantation ownership; the response to which is that there’s oodles of data demonstrating that even after slavery was abolished, discriminatory national and local government policies resulted in African Americans being incarcerated at higher rates, restricted in terms of where they could live/access services, restricted in terms of educational and career opportunities, denied business and home loans, etc. etc. etc. until you run out of paper.
^ When you look at it like that, with 15 or so generations of systematic oppression, political disenfranchisement, impoverishment, incarceration, denial of access to services, denial of education, denial of career opportunities, and then half of which on top saw systematic forced labour, torture, raape, forced birthing… $5m per person doesn’t sound like an excessive amount of money to me.

More slaves were taken from Africa to the Middle East but you don’t see many over there because the vast majority were castrated as part of the process.

We're talking about African-Americans because it was SF that started the conversation, it's not just America though. It's a conversation in the Carribbean islands too.
The Germans and German companies paid, and are paying reparations for their use of forced labour, and genocide, who to and how much I don't know, they, as far as I know, have never tried to sweep anything under carpet or put their fingers in their ears in denialism and have confronted the evils in their national past, I'd argue to the credit to them as a nation. Mistakes were made and we're sorry, how can we compensate for this grievous harm?
It is a worthwhile conversation to have, that's how you get down to the brass tacks of any complex issue.
I don't particularly think it's helpful to argue about other perpetrators historical or contemporary because it just seems a bit deflectionary. If America is leading the conversation it's, imo, because it's their history, Britain could do well and catch up, take the heat out it and at least have a conversation, even if it means we refute any reparation claims. Sayin aye but what about the XYZ's they were just as bad contributes nothing...imo.
I think if it's talked about in a respectful and responsible manner then so much the better for all concerned (I've no dog in fight).

Without doubt there are on-going legacy issues, how do you measure them though? Good luck to those trying to figure it all out. I'd love to hope that at the end of any conversation we, as a species, would be all the better for it... I did say earlier that I am generally optimistic...on this though, maybe change optimism for delusional.

Yusef Salaam, one of the five New York teens wrongfully convicted and imprisoned for the 1989 rape of a jogger in Central Park, issued a brief statement following Thursday's criminal indictment of former US President Donald Trump.
Trump had called for the state's death penalty to be reinstated in order to execute the defendants, taking out full page advertisements in the press in order to do so, and never apologized after they were cleared.
Now prospective city council member Salaam tweeted:
"For those asking about my statement on the indictment of Donald Trump—who never said sorry for calling for my execution—here it is:
Karma."

Trump obsession is a little strange. I’d be much more aggrieved about the wrongful conviction rather than what some idiot real estate mogul had to say at the time.
I hope those poor chaps get tens of millions of dollars, it doesn’t make up for it completely, but it helps them enjoy their lives & help their families.

I don't much much value on stuff that's in the BBC tbh
Rosenburg is deeply biased in his opinions on Russia
The BBC is as biased as Al Jazeera and Russia Today
They're probably running a similar article in Russia Today about how the West is preparing it's citizens for nuclear conflict aswell
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Oops my bad, ill see if I can find a YouTube clip rom some random for you to take more seriously than direct quotes from a Russian Nobel Laureate.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Barack Obama dropped 26.000+ bombs during his presidency and received the Nobel Peace Prize.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Go check when he recieved that Peace Prize?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Maybe he could also check out the bomb drop numbers, conventional and barrel bomb, in all those countries his hero Vlad the mad has bombarded whilst he's at it.
Glasshouses and all that.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Without doubt there are on-going legacy issues, how do you measure them though?

Karma."

If anything, I'd say Trump was probably more angry.
