Absolute nonsense.
“It would also mean that, if & when Labour are in power, the Conservatives could simply block Labour legislation in the same manner.”
Could he please explain how Labour refusing to use a fatal motion has prevented the Tories from doing so in future? (Clue: it hasn’t. In any way.)
It’s Labour abdicating its duty and playing politics at the expense of absolutely fundamental democratic rights, and it facking stinks.

It doesn't stop the Tories doing it in future but it doesn't set the precedent for them to do so
I'd rather they backed the motion for obvious civil liberties reasons as well as just not allowing Braverman to do whatever she wants but now it will have to be voted on in the commons and Labour have assurances from backbench Tories they will vote against too
Let's see what happens but the vibe I get from it is once again Starmer is not wanting to give the Tory press anything substantial to have a go at him for.
They're going to do it anyway but now it's still like the Mail's fanciful front page blaming him for the mess the Tories have made

It is a trap set so Labour lose either way, so they have decided to play the long game rather than give them ammunition. You should really be angry about the Tories for this, but as usual the left will spend their time angry about their own party and give the ammunition to the right anyway.

Yup.
Labour have never really been the party which respected civil liberties - they are more liberal than the Tories, but its never been a major concern for the party.
The idea that this is a strategic move is naive. There won't be much political capital to reform these wars, as for Labour there will be more pressing immediate concerns. Nor will much of the public be that concerned either.
The Grenfell fire killed at least 72 people six years ago today
Six years later and according to FullFact and the Building Safety Program, of the 10,600 buildings affected by flammable cladding in the UK, only 4% have been fully fixed. 3% have started work which is still in progress. And 93% are yet to see *any* work to address the problem start.
Another national scandal, and further disasters waiting to happen.

I think this is alarmist speculation. You can’t sort this stuff out quickly and easily.
No doubt there were / are notable deficiencies with fire safety in buildings such as Grenfell built 50 years ago and I think that council owned buildings have a responsibility to limit disasters such as Grenfell but it’s a never ending process really.
Deliberately neglected construction should be penalised and certainly remedied but in general fire safety standards clearly improve over time. What is built today will be looked at as medieval safety-wise 50 years from now.
We cannot continuously upgrade all buildings, it’s too expensive.
Regardless the recent Building Safety Act is as good as one could expect where buildings 5 stories or more have to be guaranteed by the developers to upgrade; owners cannot pay and I’d argue that even developers (compliant ones anyway) are facing a huge ongoing commitment which will at least in part be passed on to the homeowners anyway.
A thin veneer of compassion covering what it really is all about: big, big money for the biggest of sectors; notably insurance.
