Can't argue with him on Empire or the silly baubles handed out in remembrance of what once was.

I'm generally in favour of some form of national recognition for good people who've done good things, but the empire stuff is sepia tinged, outdated nonsense that if anything, holds us back as a modern country.

I'm generally in favour of some form of national recognition for good people who've done good things, but the empire stuff is sepia tinged, outdated nonsense that if anything, holds us back as a modern country.

Canada has a national award, "The Order of Canada".
As an aside. Conman Black was a Lord in the HoL, had to give up his Canadian citizenship in order to accept. When he was charged and found guilty of his financial crimes he begged for it back so he could take advantage of the 1/3 time served of sentence and U.K. was 1/2 and U.S. was even more. He was refused.
Lord Black of (double) Cross Harbour.
Oh and Blair named him to HoL as a Tory lord. FFS

I seem to remember a tradition of naming enough peers to pass legislation that had been voted down in HoL by governing parties.

In 50 years time there will be less of an issue as the birth rates are much lower. The age demographics of the population will be more balanced and that ratio will be much lower.

More balanced? You do know a large portion of Generation X are predicted to live past 100.

I think you mean Gen Z. Gen X life expectancy is 85. Longer that the Boomers but their retirement date is later and most don't have enough savings to retire.
