First we have Putin telling us that Ukraine's incursion into Ruzzia is provocative; then we have the NFarage complaining that he is being singled out and is afraid for his safety. Now we have JD Vance saying name calling and bullying should never be in politics.

Do these instigators not have any self awareness?

US supermarket giant Kroger is busy doing two things.

One we’ve already seen some of in Europe: introducing networked digital price tags on shelves which will allow the chain to change prices much more quickly, enabling, for example (and this is an industry analyst’s example), surge pricing for water or ice cream when it's hot outdoors.

If that first one sounds like exploitative price gouging (and it is), then wait for the second one.

Through a partnership with Microsoft EDGE, Kroger plans to place cameras at its digital displays, which will use facial recognition tools to determine the gender and age of a customer captured on camera and present them with personalized offers and advertisements on the ‘EDGE Shelf’.

EDGE will allow Kroger to use customer data to build personalized profiles of each customer... quickly updating and displaying the customer’s maximum willingness to pay on the digital price tag.

My heart sank when I read this.

If there really is a huge sky fairy, none of this would happen to anyone.

I'm not opposed to Kruger using this technology in it's business model but for a free market to really be free they have to have their monopolies broken up

A cousin of mine has worked in the water industry down South for 40yrs, he has said that prior to privatisation pipe work was an annually scheduled in the 2 districts he worked in, replacement and/or repair. Since privatisation, and almost the first instruction they got from the new managers was that was being "re-assessed" he said that in one of the Birmingham areas where he was a pipeline supervisor they hadn't replaced a pipe in 11yrs, I know NOWT about the technical side of it but that seems like it could be part of the problem?

I’ve said before but it’s a national scandal and imo there should be criminal prosecutions.

To wilfully pay out hundreds of millions in dividends and bonuses whilst letting the infrastructure and standards fall to literally dangerous levels should be a crime in itself. To then try and pass the cost of repairing that infrastructure onto the customer is beyond the pale.

The CEO of Severn Trent got paid over three million last year, £1.5m of which was a bonus… there were over 400,000 unauthorised spills in 2023, up by over 50%.

Just prosecute these fvckers, and I mean jail.

posted on 14/8/24

On a plus note they are now investing, as I am recruiting the engineers that are doing it for Severn Trent, but that cost is being passed onto the ‘customer’.

I don’t even like the word customer in this context tbh.

Genuinely bad people.

Surge pricing needs to be banned, full stop.

There’s no commercial imperative, there’s no benefit to the consumer, it’s discriminatory, it’s predatory, and it’s about nothing more than price gouging. That’s before the potential consent and data issues involved in using facial recognition (which, thankfully, I’m pretty sure would already be illegal in the UK and EU).

Across the West, we’ve let ‘the market’ dictate far too much for far too long to the detriment of consumers, workers, animals, society and the environment. It won’t self-regulate and consumers can’t or won’t control or curb it.

As with fashion, animal husbandry and food production, construction and housing, and myriad other industries, we need a fresh look at the regulatory regimes.

I think Labour have said they are going to start looking into criminal prosecution for failing water companies if it's warranted.

I hope they follow through with it.
