I doubt it, especially if you're coming from Nigeria, our barely one week of civil unrest is nothing compared to what goes on there

It's the crackdown on visas for dependents
----------------------------------------------------------------------
We’ve had headline TV news stories here showing some of the random attacks on black and brown people in the streets. We’ve had interviews playing with British Muslims saying that they’re scared to leave their homes. And if we’ve had them here, they’ve been playing on the news across the Commonwealth, for sure.

It certainly won’t have helped matters for UK universities.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Students from the EU aren't coming because of Brexit, students from Nigeria and India are seeing numbers reduced because they can't bring as many dependents

If you think anyone in Nigeria is focusing on a couple of small disturbances in the UK you clearly aren't aware of what's been going on over there

https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/crgeexzdl4wo
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yeah, that’s not what I said though.

You said that the scenes last week might have put a few more off, I'm saying highly unlikely to have an influence on numbers from Nigeria and India and the visa crackdown is the real issue

‘Universities fear riots will deter foreign students even after payment

…Vice-chancellors fear that far-right attacks and riots will deter foreign students from taking up their places this year. India, Nigeria and Hong Kong are among the countries that have issued warnings to their citizens in Britain.’

https://www.thetimes.com/uk/education/article/universities-fear-riots-will-deter-foreign-students-even-after-payment-tf282f67

Cursory Google search discovers that Nigeria, Malaysia, Australia, Indonesia, the UAE and India amongst others all sent out alerts warning nationals living in or visiting the UK about conditions on the streets the last week.

I didn’t say it’d affect numbers from Nigeria and India; although I do think it’s worth considering who the Nigerian and Indian students the UK receives are.

A very, very comfortable majority are from those countries’ top 1-5%. Affluent, privately educated, very comfortably shielded from civil unrest (on their own soil, at least).

‘Indian post-graduate students told of their shock today at the far-right riots continuing to sweep across Britain as they predicted a major fall in post-graduate applications from abroad.

Garima Singh, 36, said she was too scared to leave her house-share over the planned disorder in Harrow, north-west London.

The masters student at the University of West of Scotland’s London campus, who came to Britain in 2022 to further her career prospects, said: “I’m feeling scared because today it’s going to happen in Harrow and I’ve been advised from many people not to go outside.

“International students are here only for their studies and for their futures, so this kind of thing disturbs them.

“When we chose the UK, we had considered what is the safest place? In India we have many options like the US, Canada or Australia.”

She said the riots would lead to a “significant change” in Britain’s reputation for safety among potential Indian international students.

“I don’t think the UK will be the top priority after seeing the present scenario,” she said.

“If I was in India, I don’t think I would apply to the UK for study.”’

Anecdotal, obviously. But I’m sure that her thoughts won’t be unique.

Why is she unlikeable? I keep seeing people say this but no one ever gives a reason.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I have no opinion either way, but I actually think it’s an automatic reaction by most. They see everyone else saying it so think they have to. There’s a lot of that round here.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's a matter of seeing how she can come off as unlikeable to some people, which is completely normal as that's just the way it is.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

This still isn't an answer to why she is unlikeable, which I think is a fair question. Are you able to give me an explanation of what your enlightened mind can see that I have been unable to?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I never found her likeable personally. Don't think I'll start now just because I want her to win.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Yeah, that still doesn't answer why.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why doesn't anyone like anyone, or vice versa. Most of the time we don't even know why ourselves.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
So you don't know. I always have a reason for liking or disliking someone. If I don't, then I am indifferent.

Makes sense why we've had to go round the houses to get an answer though and makes your little outburst of 'It's a matter of seeing how she can come off as unlikeable to some people' even weirder. How is anyone supposed to see it if you don't even know?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Of course I don't know. For a person like you I think it's a matter of seeing how she can come off as unlikeable to some people.

I've never seen this line of questioning when I said I didn't like Mr so and so or Mrs so and so down the road. Weird. I'm also well aware that it's a first impression, something which humans evolved doing which we still do, but probably with more awareness that we are doing it.

OK. You carry on with your irrational dislike of people for unknown reasons. What a way to live.

I'm sure they're not unique and I'm sure the Morning Star would never cherry pick one person's story to fit their narrative

I still think given what I've stated before that last week's 2 nights of trouble will have had negligible impact compared to other reasons

I don’t think that anyone would argue that for non-EU citizens the exclusion of families and partners from student visas hasn’t been - and won’t continue be - the biggest blocker for potential students, of course

Lewis’s Tweet makes next to no sense, but for the love of Abraham, can someone please explain to me how it is remotely anti-Semitic whilst keeping a straight face?

These kind of ridiculous claims are as infuriating as they are facking hilarious actually, because they’re patently disingenuous and do a serious disservice to the Jewish community in more ways than one.

It's not but the whole things shows what a clusterfwck the whole debate about conflict in the middle east is.

Israel does something terrible and Lewis connects it with islamaphobia in the UK... As a result LAA step in with their own complaint saying it's actually antisemitic to do so

Sometimes (lots of times) these machinations are factional.

Elements of the Labour Leadership want all of the SCP out of the party and elements of the SCP and wider left think Starmer is right wing and want to set up their own new (NEW, NEW) left wing party for the SCP to join... Which under FPTP would hand power back to the increasingly insane Right

He's not blameless but this is going to be tricky for Starmer to resolve
