That's the choice greedy directors decide. Rather than showing a bit of humility, graciously accept this fairly modest hit as way of thank you to the hard working tax payers for the fact they have a business at all, but that's all yesterday's news I suppose.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
Do you honestly think the Directors of Sainsbury's give a hoot? What about the Directors of the local grocery store that you don't visit?

If they want to hit greedy directors they'd raise corp tax on big businesses, but they won't do that because they don't want to alienate their big business chums. Instead they throw out a token of appeasement to people who still think they're left wing which doesn't change much for anyone except a load of struggling small businesses that are going to go under.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I buy things from my local independent grocer every day but thanks for telling me that I don't.

If a business that already employs minimum wage staff cannot afford less than a pound an hour increase, it's not really a business is it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

See, this is the thing. It’s not just one hit that’s the issue. It’s 3 of them all at the same time. And that corner shop whilst not representative of all businesses, operates on shoe string margins and likely involve working all hours.

You take away the incentive for these particular owners to do well, then why should they bother at all.

Add to that the worsening abuse shop keepers suffer from along with the uncontrolled shoplifting; it’s already an industry that is struggling.

And that’s before industries like hospitality and the like.

Greedy directors but.

If they decide not to bother, someone else will, that's the way it works. Minimum wage had to be brought in in the first place because greedy directors maximised profits over providing a fair day's pay for a fair day's work.

The country is on its knees, private enterprise isn't immune to pain, it has its part to play in improving the national situation. If companies decide its not desirable to operate in this country because of minor tax rises and meagre wage increases, bye!
A few might decide to relocate, the majority won't.

No they won’t. If there’s little incentive then industries decline.

And private industry will play its part as long as it feels involved and not just dictated to in a manner of “you will pay”.

I’ve run a number of private companies and own a couple. Costs get passed on. If you are clobbered with more and more taxation and red tape, you hunker down.

The idea of all this was to get them to invest.

Let’s wait and see how the markets react over the next couple of weeks. I genuinely hope they have the mix right but like many I fear the worst.

There’s a statistically negligible number of atmospheric physicists, climatologists, geochemists, ecologists and other scientists in related fields who don’t believe that sapiens is the cause of climate change.

The only real debate is about what how much of the change is due to our direct generation of CO2 and other greenhouse gases, how much is down to increased livestock farming, how much is due to deforestation, etc.

There’s no doubting that the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is the cause though; none whatsoever. Or that man is the cause of the increase in that concentration.

There are only two reasons to dismiss MMCC: ignorance and stupidity. The evidence is irrefutable.

Labour are absolutely right to be pushing the minimum wage up, and IMO, they should be looking at ways to incentivise businesses (tax relief the obvious one) to heavily flatten pay structures.

Why not offer tax breaks for businesses which, for example, keep lower ratios of executive to entry level pay? Might help boost wages for the lowest earners, which, as we know, is the best way to get money circulating around the economy and drive growth.

There is the (fair) question Ginge has raised about the burden on small businesses of increasing the minimum wage and NI contributions simultaneously, and I hope we see Labour follow through with their pledges to address business rates, help with finance for SMEs and guarantee a proportion of public contracts to small businesses.

Completely the reverse of what every single one of those individuals I listened to said.

Their view was that warming of the planet was a natural occurrence which was being dramatically speeded up because of human influence.

Seems they all disagree with you. They disagree that human intervention is the actual cause.

Well, they’re either in a demonstrably minuscule minority, or you’ve misinterpreted what they were saying.

There’s also no argument that the planet follows natural cycles of cooling and warming; we have data on that from geologic evidence going back millions of years, and ice core data from nearly the last million. There *is* a glacial cycle, and we *are* in the warming phase of one, facts.

We also know from that ice core data that over *all* the glacial cycles during the last million years or so, atmospheric CO2 levels stayed within the range 170 to 300 parts per million (ppm). CO2 levels cycle with glacial cycles, as (largely) there’s a huge amount of CO2 locked away in ice.

We’re now at 400 ppm, and rising, quickly. Some projections have us arriving at 670 ppm, even with current actions to address our output factored in.

Breaking out of the 170 to 300 ppm range *has not happened due to any natural release of CO2*. That is another fact.

Our ice is still melting. The historic excess CO2 in the atmosphere now, which, again, is much higher than we’ve seen for at least a million years, and is largely driving the global temperature change (which your experts would not deny), is the result of human activity.

There is a pedantic argument which says, “Well, the change in temperature we’re seeing was actually *triggered* by a natural cycle…”

Fine; but that’s the equivalent of dumping ten litres of kerosene on a candle, then blaming the candle light for your house burning down.

TL; DR

There’s a (boring and completely moribund) argument which says that the warming that the planet is currently experiencing was “caused” by a natural cycle, because we entered into a period of warming before man started pumping vast quantities of CO2 into the atmosphere.

But there’s *no argument whatsoever* that a) the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere presently isn’t both historic on a geological scale and overwhelmingly due to man’s activities, and that b) there isn’t a demonstrable and intimate relationship between the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and global warming.

Climate change doesn’t “cause” specific adverse weather events.

It increases the expected frequency and severity of certain types of adverse events.

If you would like some informative and interesting reading material on the above Oscar, please let me know.
