Will be interesting to see what happens should Trump start to mentally decline further throughout his Presidency.

I don't think anyone else within the party has anywhere close to the pulling power or fanbases as Trump. The whole thing could conceivably fall apart without Trump.

Yeah to whom and when he hands over. Don’t think his mental decline is a patch on what Joe Biden’s was (not that this should be the standard). But this is his second term so the timing of handing over the reigns is important for the party and given that Trump is an ego maniac, I expect him to do what’s best for him, not the party. I mean, he’s not really a republican, he’s just him

Vance has nowhere near the charisma of Trump though. Maybe that'll improve in time but he says some very strange things and doesn't have the showmanship of Trump to sell it.

See, I don't even think Trump is charismatic. You'd think a cult leader would be, but he just isn't. He's objectively a terrible speaker, for a start.

'I go back and forth between thinking Trump is a cynicalasshole like Nixon who wouldn't be that bad (and might even prove useful) or that he's America'sHitler," he wrote privately to an associate on Facebook in 2016.

There’s not gonna be any more elections once Project 2025 is launched. Trump is the white Saddam.

I can only presume Lammy never thought he'd hold such a powerful position. He spent years claiming the only reason he wasn't a frontbencher was due to the colour of his skin, going by his performance I would say the colour of his skin is why he made it there.

He spent years criticising Trump and banging on about reparations, now it's his job to deal with it he backtracks.

This is true, they've got the house, the senate and the supreme court locked in for 2 years.

Suppose we now see if project 2025 is real.

Not sure what you'd expect Lammy to do here though given they'll have to work with Trump, would you rather he immediately start a diplomatic crisis instead?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yep.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m obviously not being serious there; but the US is an ever more conservative, theocratic, economically extreme nation, with geopolitically dangerous interests and tendencies, with which Europe (including the UK) now shares very, very little in common with beyond language and history.

It would not at all hurt - and I would argue it would be much, much healthier - for the UK to put the ‘special relationship’ to bed and start to distance itself from the US diplomatically and culturally.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Why is AP they taking so long to call the final college votes that would push Trump to 270? Is it because they're having doubts over some of the state they'd already called?

Margins in some seem more than enough.

Alaska alone would push him to 270, and he's got a 15-point lead their with about 3/4 of the vote counted.

I think one thing this does show is people are voting out and blaming incumbents a lot more now.

4 years ago there was a record turnout to get Trump out, now he's on course to win the popular vote for the first time.

Probably just a sign that everyone everywhere is fed up no matter who's in power.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Probably too soon to state it as a pattern / trend. But an interesting observation
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Agreed. The Dems facked up so bad in the Biden administration that they allowed the most hated man 4 years ago to now win.

IMO, they would have won if they hadn't backed the genocide alone, leave alone other issues.

I'd love nothing more than to reduce our ties/over reliance on America to be honest, but that's going to take time to implement.

It's really something we should have been doing over the past 5 or so years but we didn't exactly help ourselves in that regard with Brexit.

I honestly don’t think that Trump or Vance are remotely smart enough to know where they’re being led.

I’m not frightened by either of those douchebags. Trump, in of himself, isn’t going to be interested in any policy or legislation outside of those impacting his wealth and his freedom. Left alone in isolation, he’d do very limited harm.

It’s the people that Trump and Vance will now enable whom we should be worried about. The Republican machine is now more heavily stocked with political authoritarians, religious fundamentalists and economic disaster capitalists than Reagan might have had nightmares about.

And they have a (publicly stated) determination to ensure that the judiciary and senior posts in government departments are actively filled with people holding these ideals.

If they’re successful, there’s going to be an awful lot of damage done to social institutions, federal institutions, workers’ rights, personal freedoms, public health, and the environment which will be very difficult to undo.

A reminder that the first thing Trump set in motion when he entered the White House the last time was the US’s withdrawal from the Paris Accord.

And that he’s said he’ll do the same thing again.

There is a very good chance - and don’t just take my word for it, this is what UN experts are saying - that if the US withdraws again, it’ll be curtains for the agreement.
