This comes across very US, head in the sand, centric, that last sentence in particular.

Rolling news was in it's infancy around 2001 and social media wasn't really a thing. With the advent of both these its lead to a quicker news cycle and a shorter attention span in the viewing public. People like Arab repeating 'breaking news', often fron Twitter etc, are a symptom of this and, as a by product, contribute to a news cycle where stories are never followed up or investigated further.

This means a government, Israel for example, or an army, the IDF, can target hospitals or refugee camps, offer thoughts and prayers, promise to investigate but do nothing. The news cycle moved on to the next atrocity, controversy, scandal or hypocrisy and, months later, our attention has been lost.

Not really, some countries had been dealing with terrorism for years. Yes the scale and method of attack were new and a shock. I.think most of the shock came from the US being attacked on its soil by foreigners. Pearl Harbour and the World Trade in 94 being rare exceptions. Most terrorism in the US prior to 9/11 was domestic. Plus shock at how easy it was for the perpetrators to carry it out in a relatively low tech way.

The Tsunami 20 years ago in the Indian ocean was just as shocking IMO. Same with the huge explosion in Beirut port a few years ago, Russian annexing of Crimea in 2014 and the ongoing situation in Gaza and the Wst Bank.

ANOTHER ceasefire violation and you’ve got the Americans and the entire West emboldening groups like Hezbollah even further.
