The whole notion of your own personal carbon footprint is fossil fuel propaganda - literally!

The first carbon footprint calculator was developed and popularised by BP in a $250 million campaign. Why? To individualise the problem, and let big polluters off the hook.

Individual responsibility is all good, cutting down personal air travel etc, but let's not forget those that provide the products that created the problem in the first place. They need to be held accountable.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Remove the demand and the plastic doesn’t get made, the planes don’t fly, and the cows aren’t reared.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Demand can’t be removed, only evolved. Innovation is a far more plausible pathway than returning to the Bronze Age.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They don’t like the technology argument mate. I agree with you entirely when it comes to this issue. Technology will be the saviour and we can’t ask China & India to stop developing because of the planet.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well if we are going to neuter our economies because of climate change everyone should have to. Such a huge advantaged can be gained by having all your rivals go Green while you go full steam (generated by coal) ahead with polluting the planet.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
That’s why we don’t do it either. Slowly slowly, it will happen. We don’t need to live in fear of the predictions being put forward.

Semantics? How about cigarettes?
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Unconvinced. People just find new vices. Our country's population is very unhealthy now despite a decrease in smoking compared to the overall health of the population during the tobacco heyday.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Life expectancy? Same as the tobacco heyday? Don't think so.

Reminds me of that crank Janet Yellen in the Biden Administration wanting developed economies to sign up to a global agreement on corporation taxes.

Yeah right. Every country other than the US would see a huge advantage in lower taxes for luring industries. One of the few real main draws for smaller developed economies. They won't give that up.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
😂😂😂😂

Reminds me of Jeff Bezos supporting Biden increasing corporation tax. I wonder why he’s supporting it 🤔 let me think 🤔

I also don't see the argument that smoking is comparable to a thousands of years staple of human consumption like meat. To me it is as dubious as pretending weed consumption is equal to alcohol consumption.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You have obviously not seen serious alcoholics.
Liver, kidney,brain/mental, problems. Basically attacks all organs in the body. Weed is nowhere near as dangerous.

I saw a book review last week. The book was actually pointing out that a lot of our technology grows from reducing harmful effects of previous technologies.
But eventually this planet will run out of resources.
It's like I can't believe there will be infinite growth in markets and wealth. How does that happen on a planet with limited resources?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I think we’re really far off running out of resources.

Clean energy gets better with more investment and we’re seeing the benefits of it now. It’s only really been 50 years since we even had any global knowledge of caring about the environment.

Isn’t Britain’s co2 level now lower than it has been for a long long time?

The big ‘problem’ is China & India and they ain’t giving up their development anytime soon.

Big companies love regulations, as they help write them.

And it savages the smaller competition

Not if he doesn’t have to he won’t, no. Nor will Bill Gates, I don’t think many pay taxes that they don’t have to.

Biden will get plaudits though for raising the corporate tax rate, even if it brings in less tax receipts and doesn’t effect huge monsters like Amazon.

As NPE pointed out, offering tax exemptions for large companies is something that developing countries can offer and if developed countries like the UK & US stop offering similar, they will simply move and tens of thousands of jobs (and all that come with those jobs) go the way of the dodo and start up in India etc instead.

It will only work when it’s globally imposed, until then I really wish people would stop crying about it. It’s boring.

Alcohol sales in Canada are up 30%+ since a year ago.
Weed only 8%.
Don't really know what that means, except that dipsomaniacs may be more needy than normal weed smoking folk.

Is there a lot of these being stolen from cars in the UK?
Seems to be an epidemic of it here.

I’m not surprised someone like her came out with this. It’s always a systemic problem that needs to be changed rather than individual responsibility.

If people stopped getting on planes, there would be less flights and so on...the market will determine it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
You're right, of course the fossil fuel industry didn't know the impact of its products, neither did big tobacco, neither did big pharma. It's nothing to do with systemic capitalist pigdog behaviour.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’m getting an electric car so I’m alright yeah?

I've no idea the relevance of your question.

Went up slightly overall the first year. 15%-17%. Stayed the same in 18-24 year olds. Dropped amongst teens.
I'd think the overall increase would be down to previous surveys being done during prohibition and people not admitting use.
Good that it's down in teens.
