Probably the most spirited display of the season - well done!
Coming back from 2-0? Amazing. I just hope Issam is not badly hurt. He played well in the Checkatrade games but got kicked all over the place.
At half time I was forming the opinion that Shrewsbury's superiority was evidence of the fact that we just did not have what was needed to compete at the top - play-offs were now scarcely within our scope, but they proved me wrong in the second half and this could well be a significant pointer to the success we just might achieve now. The play-offs could well be a realistic prospect.
Well just got back in.
First half we were out fought, out battled and bullied off the ball most of the half. We gave them to much respect and the goal we conceded from the corner was a big lack of concentration. There big centre half and centre midfielder had strong physical games and a lot of there play came from there distribution. They were a long ball team but Baudry and Wright coped with the majority of it.
2nd half expecting a better half started poorly with again another soft goal conceded from a corner. I'm not saying who was at fault for any you can see yourselves on the highlights.
Fergie was going ballistic on the sidelines however the decision to bring Beestin on for Kongolo was a stroke of genius from him.
Straight away Beestin took the game to Shrewsbury he changed the game. He brought players into play, harassed, ran the channels and battled. Soon the rest of us started to do the same suddenly a different rovers were on the field. Attack after attack linking play up resulted in us gaining a corner from which Baudry headed in after some dodgy goalkeeping from the shrews. Suddenly it was all us. We kept going and going this resulting in the intro of Ben kemis who also offered similar to Beestin. A long range punt into the box was caught and carried over the line bizarrely by there keeper under pressure from I think Marquis to get us an equaliser. A couple of late chances could have seen us leave with all 3 points but id say a draw was fair a proper game of 2 halves but my man of the match was Beestin. A fantastic display from him and a great sub by Fergie.
Lawlor prevented shrews scoring a couple more in the first half with 2 great saves.
Butler seemed to struggle before he limped off and Baudry and Wright formed a solid partnership from there on in. Mason in the first half was garbage at left back but in the 2nd half moved to right back and had a much better 2nd half and even getting forward to help the attack.
Houghton was bullied off the ball for a large part of the game and Whiteman seemed to suffer a couple of late naughty challenges but it didn't knock him out his stride. Rowe was solid enough and did well 2nd half. Copps same as Rowe. Kangolo was bone idle in the first half and offered hardly anything. Got caught out numerous times and didn't seem to fancy it against a physical side in the cold weather. Marquis was fantastic he held the ball up well in a more unusual role how ever he was up top on his own for the majoirty but when Beestin came on they were both a handful. Beestin was clearly Mom see above and Ben Kemis had a positive impact but unfortunately another crude tackle meant he limped off to leave us with 10 men for the last 10 mins.
Overall pleased to come away with a point and an enjoyable match for a neutral.
Another game unbeaten
Forgot to mention Blair he had a steady enough game. Like the rest improved 2nd half
Cheers for the report azza, always good to get a view from someone who actually was at the match.
Big shame for Ben the Chemist, he has had to wait a long time for his chance and then gets clattered.
Did the ref take any action with the Shrews player who did him.
Yes was a shame Hound he was positive from the time he stepped on the field. Not even a free kick was given it seemed an aggressive tackle but the ref deemed it ok. He was down for a couple of mins so must have felt it. I've just read he and Butler will definitely miss the Scunny match.
A bit like the one one Williams then, puts him out injured and no action taken against the player who did it.
Having watched the game on iFollow I agree with most of what Azza says, and think a draw was a fair result – although at the end we looked more likely to nick it than the Shrews. I though it was a strange starting eleven as it did not show much attacking intent. Then at first Copps was playing more central upfront than Marquis – not a job for a guy who turned 37 two days ago! Kongolo frustrates me – sometimes he shows real class, but as Azza said, today he seemed not to like the cold or the physical nature of the play.
The Shrews could have put the game out of sight in the first half, but thanks to Lawlor and some desperate defending and a couple of misses, all we gave up was yet another set piece goal. Actually, with VAR the goal should have been disallowed as the ball was outside the corner quadrant when the kick was taken – I know many players do it (Copps on occasion), but the Shrew blatantly did it every time.
A poor start to the second half and another goal from a corner – Fergie certainly seemed agitated and had a “discussion” with the fourth official. I wonder if he thought the Shrew was offside – it happened so fast I do not know if we had someone on the goal line – I hope the highlights are clear on that. It was sad Wright was off the field at the time getting his gash fixed again – not sure why they did not do a better job on it at halftime. Maybe heading the ball started heavy bleeding again.
Beestin was an inspired sub and really changed the game. It was amazing our first goal came from a corner – all three so far. Ben Khemis was a surprising sub, but it worked. A slightly bizarre equalizer, and I think it was Baudry and Marquis rushing towards their ‘keeper.
I thought the crunching tackle on Ben should have been a yellow, yet no foul was given. My wife thought it was retaliation for the goal. To me, another strange decision by the ref was a yellow for Mason for handball. It was handball, but to me it seemed the ball bobbled up and struck Mason, and there was no intent on his part.
Onwards to the Iron with a somewhat depleted team.
A fair summary PDX, kind of matches up what I have read on the vsc by others who were at the game.
With regards to Kongolo, to me it is inevitable tha5 he will blow hot and cold with his performances as he is still only a lad of 19.
He is improving though and given time and understanding the consistency will come.
Thanks for the reports lads
Thanks, Hound. I have not been on the VSC for a long time - at the time they were attacking players that I thought were not that bad. However, that was then when I only saw highlights. You may have noticed I'm more "vocal" now that I can watch most of the League One games live (frustrating that I cannot see Cup games). I feel luckier than you all, that I can "go" to away games much cheaper than you can. OK, it is not the same as being there, but I thank iFollow for allowing me to be so much closer to my passion for life.

Hi Azza. Just curious about who filled in at LB when Mason moved across to RB. Blair?
Hi Albi. It was Rowe. Mason went right back and that pushed Matty Blair into The right side of midfield.
